Top Recruit Quinn Cook Chooses Duke

The defending national champion Duke Blue Devils have a dynamic freshman expected to make an impact this season in Kyrie Irving. Coach Mike Krzyzewski has plenty more talent on the way in the form of Oak Hill Academy point guard Quinn Cook, who has verbally committed to Duke for the 2011-2012 season.

Cook chose Duke over Villanova, UCLA and Duke's arch rival, North Carolina. The 6'1" point guard is No. 24 on ESPNU's Top 100 list and the No. 5 point guard available. Cook will join a star-studded recruiting class that also includes guard Austin Rivers, the No. 1 overall player and son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc, and center Marshall Plumlee, the younger brother of current Blue Devils Miles and Mason.

With senior guard Nolan Smith's graduation imminent, Cook has a great chance to find a spot in the Blue Devils' rotation.

Top Local Recruit Quinn Cook Deciding Between Duke And UCLA

In nine days, the NCAA early signing period will begin, and local recruit Quinn Cook will surely be one of the most sought-after prospects. Cook, who will play for Oak Hill Academy this season after three years at DeMatha, is reportedly deciding between Duke and UCLA, according to Oak Hill coach Steve Smith.

Oak Hill point guard Quinn Cook will announce this week for either Duke or UCLA, according to Oak Hill head coach Steve Smith.

"He is close to making a commitment and I think he will probably do something middle or the end of the week," Smith said Monday afternoon by phone.

He added: "I think he's got his mind made up and he's just not saying."

One complication for Cook is the status of Duke's phenom freshman point guard Kyrie Irving. It was long assumed that Irving would go to the NBA after this season, but with the NBA potentially facing a lockout, Irving may elect to stay in Durham for another year. If so, then Cook will likely be a backup, whereas he's guaranteed of a starting job at UCLA.

One thing we know is that Cook will not be going to North Carolina or Villanova, two teams initially in the hunt. Smith said that Cook is not considering either of those schools.
