Capitals Will Reportedly Not Pursue Anton Volchenkov

According to Tarik El-Bashir, who spoke with two sources familiar with the Capitals’ offseason plans, shutdown defenseman Anton Volchenkov will not be pursued by GM George McPhee:

The Caps “are not going to make him an offer,” one of the sources familiar with Washington’s plans told me.

While the identity of these sources and their credibility is unknown, Volchenkov’s desired salary – in the $4 to $6 million range – make him difficult to sign.

This report runs contrary to a previous rumor in which the Caps were a favorite to land the 6’1" 226 pound defenseman.

Too bad

This is too bad, the Caps could use a shutdown, gritty defenseman like Volvhenkov. I still think they should trade a bunch of their old, crappy guys (Erskine, Sean Morrison, and maybe even Theodore) for veteran, experienced guys on defense. Plus, the Caps have such a developed and well-established minor league and scouting system that they have plenty of young prospects to either trade or put in the lineup.

The problem here is that Volchenkov is going to cost too much for George McPhee to justify signing him. Look for a guy like Willie Mitchell to be a solid consolation prize.
