Did Michael Sweetney Miss NBA Summer League Because He Was Overweight?

Sounds like a pretty fair premise, right? We're talking about Michael Sweetney, the former Georgetown star that has battled weight problems his entire career.

Well, that wasn't how it was explained when the Wizards announced that Sweetney would not play for their Summer League team. The team told reporters that Sweetney had a "family emergency" and could not make it out to Vegas. However, according to one source, that's not entirely accurate.

Via Scott Schroeder of SB Nation's Ridiculous Upside:

Things you need to know: source says Michael Sweetney weighed in at 348 pounds in washington and thus didn't make the trip to vegas. Ouch.

For some perspective, that's more than what Albert Haynesworth currently weighs and pretty close to what Haynesworth weighed before he reportedly shed 30 pounds.

I'm not going to pick a side here and declare one explanation right and the other wrong. Instead, I'll pose one scenario where both sides are correct: the "family emergency" was actually Sweetney's family staging an intervention for his weight problems. There. Problem solved.

If true, how ironic.
