NFL Power Rankings: Washington Redskins Ranked As High As 8, As Low As 15

NFL Power Rankings for Week 5 are mostly in the books, so where do the Washington Redskins stand? We've highlighted a number of mainstream power rankings lists in this StoryStream. SB Nation's Redskins blog Hogs Haven did the same, bringing in even more lists and pointing them out.

All in all, the Redskins are ranked anywhere between No. 8 (by CBS) and No. 15 (by Football Outsiders). Most lists have the Redskins in the 10-13 range, with only CBS and Hogs Haven themselves ranking the squad any higher. All in all, Hogs Haven's list included 11 prominent power rankings, so we have a pretty good idea that the Redskins are somewhere in the top half of the league at this point. The Redskins' standing is unlikely to change much this week with the team on a bye.

NFL Power Rankings: Washington Redskins Ranked No. 8 By CBS, Defense Receives Love

The Washington Redskins received a lot of love from CBS Sports' Pete Prisco in his Week 5 NFL Power Rankings. Specifically, Prisco spent his introduction praising the Redskins' much-improved defense. Then, he ranked the Redskins' No. 8 overall, the highest of any prominent list to date.

Here's what Prisco wrote about the Redskins' defense:

The Redskins defense that started in their 17-10 victory over the Rams on Sunday featured five new starters from a year ago, including two important down linemen in Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen and a pass rusher in rookie Ryan Kerrigan.

The addition of the players has enabled Haslett to do more of the things that he likes to do. He can be more aggressive. With Kerrigan complementing Brian Orakpo on the other side, teams are more reluctant to double or slide protections to Orakpo, who leads the team with 3 1/2 sacks. Kerrigan has 2 1/2.

The only teams in front of the Redskins on the list are the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans.

NFL Power Rankings: Washington Redskins Rise To 12th On ESPN, Still Behind New York Giants

The good news for Washington Redskins fans is that their team rose four spots in the ESPN Week 5 NFL Power Rankings. The bad news is that they are still not the highest NFC East team on the list, despite being the division leader after four weeks. The Redskins placed 12th on the ESPN list, two spots behind the New York Giants, who placed 10th. Here's the ESPN blurb about the Redskins:

Mike Shanahan might have found his new main ball carrier in an old friend, Ryan Torain.

This is the first prominent list that has the Redskins behind the Giants. Both teams are 3-1 this season, but the Redskins currently have the NFC East lead by virtue of their 28-14 Week 1 win over the Giants. New York has rebounded nicely, but surely that win should count for something.

As for the other NFC East teams, the Cowboys fall six spots to No. 17, while the Eagles drop three spots to No. 20.

NFL Power Rankings: Washington Redskins Crack Top 10 On FOX Sports List

The Washington Redskins have cracked the top 10 in one prominent NFL Power Rankings list after their Week 4 win over the St. Louis Rams. Brian Billick, writing for FOX Sports, has moved the Redskins up to No. 10 overall on his list, a three-spot rise from last week. Here is what he has to say about the Redskins.

The Redskins continue to prove they are a solid football team. Beating St. Louis doesn’t necessarily prove anything, but you still have to beat the bad teams on your schedule. After the bye, they have a big divisional home game against Philly, and then hit the road for two weeks.

Tenth is a good place to be for the Redskins, considering they haven't always looked great in winning games this season. The other NFC East teams come in at No. 14 (New York Giants), No. 17 (Dallas Cowboys) and No. 19 (Philadelphia Eagles).
