Jim Larranaga In Discussions With Miami About Head Coach Vacancy, According To Report

Stay connected for news and updates

George Mason coach Jim Larranaga has long been considered to be a mid-major lifer that would never leave for a power-conference program. However, in a bit of a surprise, Larranaga is in "serious discussions" with University of Miami officials to potentially become the school's next head coach, according to a report by Gary Parrish of CBS Sports.

Parrish reports that Larranaga has emerged as Miami's "top target," though it remains unclear whether Larranaga is interested in simply leveraging a more lucrative contract out of George Mason. Larranaga did sign a contract extension last March that would keep him in Fairfax through the 2015/16 season. He made just over $700,000 last season, according to a USA Today report.

Miami fired Frank Haith this winter, and are an ACC team, so it would technically be a step up for Larranaga. However, he has turned down offers from power-conference schools in the past, most notably when Providence came calling several years ago.
