There's a forula to winning at the U.S. Open. Make par, and take advantage of birdies when they make themselves available. If you try to chase birdies, you end up with bogies, and you find yourself at the bottom of the leaderboard. Unlike other tournaments where parisn't a bad score, par is a good score at the U.S. Open. Rory McIlroy is a perfect example of that. So far on his back nine, Rory is just sticking to the fairways, hitting the greens in regulation, and taking pars. He just birdied the 14th hole and now stands at 11-under par. For some perspective, the most under par anyone has ever been in a U.S. Open is 12, and that was Tiger Woods back in 2000.
