The Washington Capitals won their seventh game in a row at Verizon Center on Sunday afternoon, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1. Washington now has a share of the Southeast Division lead with the win and 50 points to match the Florida Panthers.
It was Dmitry Orlov with the game winner, just over a minute into the third period to break the 1-1 tie. It was Orlov's first goal of the season and his career, coming on a feed from Jason Chimera. Orlov took a centering pass from Chimera, put it on Carolina goalie Cam Ward and then slammed home the rebound in front and he skated past.
Tomas Vokoun was huge in net for the Caps, stuffing 43 of 44 shots that the Canes put on net. Carolina put twenty more shots on goal, as newly activated Jeff Skinner and company kept the pressure on in the offensive zone through the end of the game. But it was the Caps who came away with the win - their third straight one goal victory to keep the home winning streak alive. They host the Islanders on Tuesday night, looking to make it eight in a row.
