The Maryland Terrapins beat Cornell on Tuesday 70-62, but the game should not have been that close. The Terps played their best 20 minutes of basketball in the first half, jumping out to a 30-9 lead before letting Cornell get back into the game a little bit. In the second half the wheels fell off and the Terps went about ten minutes without scoring a field goal. They did just enough to hang on, but from what we know about Mark Turgeon, "just enough" isn't going to cut it. Turgeon had some unkind things to say about his players after the game.
Turgeon: "We showed our inexperience and immaturity and I just hope we grow out of it."

He continued.
Turgeon frustrated by his young team. "They look at me like I’m absolutely crazy every day in practice about doing everything right."

I don't mind Turgeon getting under the skin of his own team a little bit. He is nothing if not honest about his team. He is the first to prop them up when they do good things, and he is also good at taking some blame himself. The Terps did not look so good in the second half, and Turgeon is just trying to help them work that out.

It wasn't a pretty second half at the Comcast Center on Tuesday night, but the Maryland Terrapins held on for an eight point win in their final non-conference game before ACC play tips off this weekend. The Terps struggled against Cornell's zone, unable to get any penetration or interior passing to break it down on the offensive end. Maryland also struggled mightily from behind the arc in the second half and finished only four of 21 from three-point range.
After leading the game off on a 16-0 run, the Terps were outscored by the Big Red by seven points in the second, as Cornell cut the lead to as little as one with just over two minutes to play. But Maryland would go on 9-2 run over the final two minutes to improve to 9-1 at home this season. Cornell was equally poor from three-point range, hitting just seven of a whopping 31 attempts from long distance.
Sean Mosley led the Terps with 19 points but it was Alex Len who came on strong in the second half to keep Maryland in front. Len finished a perfect five for five from the floor, and five of six from the line to finish with 15 points. The big Ukrainian grabbed nine boards as well.
With a seven game winning streak, Maryland will now tip off conference play on Sunday in Raleigh against NC State.

As the non-conference portion of the schedule comes to a close, the Maryland Terrapins are looking for win to build momentum before entering the grind of ACC play. After one half at the Comcast Center, the Terps have a 15 point lead over Cornell on some streaky shooting from the floor. Maryland shot better than 60% from the floor in the first half, as they jumped on the Big Red early to take a 15-0 lead.
Senior leader Sean Mosley lead all scorers with 11 points, hitting two of two from behind the arc. Leading scorer Terrell Stoglin added nine points, but also dished out four assists as Mark Turgeon's club spread the wealth in the first half. Cornell is a team that relies on the three pointer, but has hit just four of 19 so far as they struggle to get any offensive momentum going.
