Chris Cooley passes physical, officially signs with Redskins

The Washington Redskins signed tight end Chris Cooley, bringing the long-time fan favorite back to the nation's capital, according to Chick Hernandez.

Cooley passed his physical and now has been officially brought into the fold, likely replacing Fred Davis after he tore his Achilles tendon on Sunday against the New York Giants.

The 30-year-old Cooley has had a tough time being productive and healthy in recent times, playing in only five games in 2011 and seven contests in 2009. Last season, Cooley was only able to make eight catches and gain 65 yards in what appeared to be his final campaign as a Redskin.

Cooley could provide a very solid security blanket for Robert Griffin III, who certainly can use all the targets he can get. With the injuries to Davis and Pierre Garcon, the Utah State product might be a valuable asset.

In his eight-year career, Cooley has caught 428 passes for 4,703 yards and 33 touchdowns.
