Washington Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo announced that third baseman Ryan Zimmerman underwent successful surgery on the AC joint in his right shoulder Thursday morning. The surgery was performed by Nationals team doctor Wiemi Douoguih and Zimmerman is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Zimmerman played with the shoulder injury throughout the 2012 season, his first after signing a multi-year contract extension worth over $100 million. Zimmerman missed 13 games over late April and early May with the condition, but recovered sufficiently to hit 25 home runs and drive in 95 runs while posting an OPS of .824.

Most of Zimmerman's production came following a cortisone shot, which Zimmerman received prior to an interleague game against the Baltimore Orioles in June. Zimmerman went 2-for-4 in the first game after he got the shot, and posted a batting average of .321 and an OPS of .967 over the remainder of the season.

The Nationals also announced that utility infielder Chad Tracy had arthroscopic surgery performed on his left knee by Dr. Douoguih. Tracy, who appeared in 73 games for Washington in 2012, is also expected to be ready for spring training.
