RGIII injury update: Redskins quarterback still not cleared for contact

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III stated that he felt no symptoms of a concussion while participating in practice on Wednesday. According to the rookie quarterback, he expects to start in Sunday's Week 6 game against the Minnesota Vikings. However, he has yet to be cleared for contact.

Griffin sustained what was described as a mild concussion in the third quarter of Sunday's 24-17 loss against theAtlanta Falcons. While attempting to slide during a rush, Griffin was hit high by Atlanta linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, which caused his upperbody to snap backwards with his head hitting Jonathan Babineaux.

The rookie quarterback explained that he needs to find a balance between being a playmaker and living to play another down. Griffin practiced sliding and running out of bounds during practice on Wednesday, which were welcomed by mock cheers from his teammates.

Griffin explained that his film study hasn't been interrupted by any limitations connected to the injury and is reacting normally to light and sound.

Robert Griffin III injury: QB confident in Week 6 return

In the wake of Robert Griffin III's concussion, the QB came out this evening saying he's confident that despite the NFL's rigorous testing, he will pass the precautions and play next week against Minnesota.

This from RGIII's Twitter account:

"Thank you for all the prayers & support I'm ok and I think after all the testing I will play next week."

Due to the current climate surrounding head injuries, the NFL will take a long look at any player suffering from a concussion, let alone one of its young stars. In order to be cleared to play, RGIII must pass a battery of tests administered not only by the Washington Redskins' organization, but by an independent doctor who is brought in by the league.

This afternoon, the duty of fill-in quarterback fell to rookie Kirk Cousins, though the Redskins could elect to return to veteran Rex Grossman, who was Washington's starter in 2012. Grossman was inactive on Sunday, and was only available as an emergency third QB.

Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins QB has to clear NFL concussion tests before return

Robert Griffin III left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons with a head injury, when the shoulder of linebacker Sean Weatherspoon struck RGIII's head as he attempted to slide in bounds. The injury has been diagnosed as a concussion, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Now that the Redskins know the extent of the injury, Griffin III will need to clear the NFL's concussion protocol this week if he hopes to play in next Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. This process involves being cleared by both a team trainer and a league-appointed overseeing trainer designed to prevent players returning from injury too quickly.

If Griffin III is unable to play next week against the Minnesota Vikings, it's likely the Redskins will yet again rely on fellow rookie and fourth-round pick Kirk Cousins. Stepping in for RGIII this afternoon, Cousins completed five passes for 111 yards, along with one touchdown and two interceptions.
