Virginia Tech vs. Miami score update: Hurricanes ahead of Hokies, 20-12, at halftime

Miami added a pair of field goals to offset Logan Thomas's touchdown run, as they lead the Hokies, 20-12, at the half.

Virginia Tech cut their deficit to five at one point, but a pair of field goals have given the Miami Hurricanes a 20-12 lead at the half on Thursday night.

After a first quarter that saw the Virginia Tech Hokies get a punt blocked and give up a big kickoff return, both of which resulted in Miami Hurricanes touchdowns, the Hokies got off to a better start in the second quarter.

On their second drive of the frame, Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas busted a 73-yard touchdown run on the sixth offensive play. The extra point was missed, however, trimming the Hurricanes' lead to 14-9 at the time.

The first play of the ensuing drive saw Hurricanes freshman running back Duke Johnson break a 65-yard run to Virginia Tech's 10-yard line. Miami stalled out from there, though, and had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from kicker Jake Wieclaw, giving the 'Canes a 17-9 advantage.

Wieclaw would later cap a 10-play, 82-yard Miami drive with another field goal, this time a 31-yarder to make the score 20-9 as the quarter wound down.

Virginia Tech tacked on a field goal of their own at the end of the quarter, as kicker Cody Journell hit a 20-yarder to complete a 10-play, 57-yard drive, making the score 20-12 at the break.
