Eagles vs. Redskins: Washington 'needed a win like this'

Patrick Smith

The Redskins took care of the Eagles on Sunday, beating them in all phases.

The Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles both came into Sunday with a 3-6 record, desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win.

Washington not only took the game, but won in convincing fashion, beating the Eagles 31-6 at FedEx Field.

Robert Griffin III was the catalyst, throwing four touchdowns - one in each quarter - to lead the Redskins to a blowout victory over their NFC East rivals. The rookie only threw one incompletion the entire afternoon, embarrassing Philadelphia's supposedly strong secondary.

Washington controlled the game on every level. The Redskins took advantage of three Eagles' turnovers while never giving the ball up themselves. On third down, Washington also got the job done, going 5-for-11 to keep drives alive.

Kevin Ewoldt at Hogs Haven talked about the importance of the win:

A very solid game by the Redskins today. Pre-game the Junkies were saying the Redskins need a blowout win. Coming off a BYE facing a team in shambles....at home...the Redskins needed a win like this.

Defensively, the Redskins shut down the Philadelphia attack, holding it to under 300 yards. Nick Foles couldn't generate any offense through the air, leaving LeSean McCoy to face 8-man fronts all game.
