Georgia Tech vs. Maryland 2012: Shawn Petty, Terrapins offense struggles in loss

The Maryland Terrapins lost to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, 33-13, in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game at Byrd Stadium. The contest saw the Terrapins' offense struggle, as it was led by linebacker turned starting quarterback Shawn Petty. Petty was called into emergency duty after season-ending injuries claimed all of Maryland's quarterbacks.

According to the SB Nation blog Testudo Times, the struggles of Petty and the offense were not a surprise. Asking for a victory in this type of situation may have been too much for the Maryland football program (4-5, 2-3 ACC) to expect.

It was unfair to expect much of Petty, who was in line to be redshirted at linebacker before moving to QB just two weeks ago in an emergency measure. And despite showing a public face to the contrary, It seemed as if Maryland's players were worn down emotionally and mentally

Petty's inability to lead the Terps' offense put a lot of strain on the defense, and eventually the Yellow Jackets' triple-option offense wore it down.

They seemed fatigued - not just physically, but mentally as well - and ever-so-slightly confused by the trip-op. Georgia Tech went for 370 rushing yards, and it was by far the worst we've seen this defense all year long.

Next Saturday, Maryland hosts the Clemson Tigers in an ACC showdown. The game time and broadcast information have yet to be determined.
