Emmanuel Okoroba and Jasper Williams help Hampton pull away from American late in the local matchup.
Hampton Pirates guard Jasper Williams scored 22 and center Emmanuel Okoroba pulled down a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Pirates topped the American University Eagles, 72-65, Tuesday night.
Hampton, playing at home at the Hampton Convocation Center, used a second-half offensive outburst to put away the Eagles late, nearly doubling their scoring from the first half.
American kept it close all game, as the two teams were tied at halftime. In just 24 minutes, Marko Vasic led the Eagles with 12 points, adding to forward Stephen Lumpkin's 12 points and 15 rebounds, which kept American in the game for most of the night.
Hampton finally got away from American about midway through the second half, behind Williams, Okoroba and guard Deron Powers, who added 17 points on the night, to close out the victory.
Guard Austin Carroll added 11 points in just nine minutes for the Eagles while coming off the bench.
