Georgetown Vs. Providence: Hoyas Defense Keys 63-53 Win Over Friars

In a game that was eerily familiar to their first meeting earlier this season, the Georgetown Hoyas were once again able to shut down the offense of the Providence Friars en route to a 63-53 score Saturday evening at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark led the scoring for Georgetown with 13 points each, but the story of this game was the suffocating Hoya defense. The Friars shot a woeful 25.9% from the field, making just 14 of their 54 attempts. Providence also struggled from the field in the first meeting between these teams on December 31st, converting only 25.5% of their field goals as Georgetown won 49-40. The Friars trailed at the half by a score of 31-20, and made a 12-5 run at the start of the second half to cut the deficit to 36-32. Georgetown responded with a 13-3 run of their own to regain control, as Thomson made some key baskets and the Hoyas increased their intensity on the defensive end.

The Hoyas have now won four of their last five games and improved their record to 20-5 overall and 10-4 in the Big East. They will look to continue their recent run of solid play when they visit Seton Hall on Tuesday night.

Georgetown Vs. Providence Score Update: Hoyas Hold 31-20 Lead

The Georgetown Hoyas hit the road to take on Providence in a Big East matchup as the Hoyas try to win back to back games coming off their loss to Syracuse. Georgetown's offense got off to a slow start but they were able to pull ahead in the first half and head into halftime with a 31-20 lead. Jason Clark leads the Hoyas in scoring in the first half with eight points while Hollis Thompson picked up only three points in the first half, hitting on just one of his five shots.

Providence battled back after trailing by as much as 10 points in the first half to pull close, but the Hoyas retook an 11 point lead right before halftime. The Friars spread the ball around more so than Georgetown did, which also showed up in the scoring with all five starters sinking at least one shot in the first half. Kadeem Betts leads the Friars in scoring with 4 points.
