The Georgetown Hoyas led the Syracuse Orange at halftime, but the Orange battled back and took down Georgetown in overtime, 64-61.
Kris Joseph's three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in overtime broke a 61-61 tie as No. 2 Syracuse defeated No. 12 Georgetown 64-61 in a thrilling game at the Carrier Dome Wednesday night.
The Georgetown Hoyas held a slight lead over the Syracuse Orange 31-27 at halftime, but couldn't close the deal in the second half. The Orange started the second half with an 8-0 run and took the lead over the Hoyas, but never led by more than six points as the teams once again began trading blows back and forth. The Orange took a 54-48 lead on another Joseph three with 4:39 remaining. The Hoyas were able to tie the game up at 55-55 with one minute to go and Syracuse couldn't get a good shot off in the final seconds as the game went into overtime.
Overtime saw three ties and three lead changes, but Joseph's three made the difference. Georgetown had one final possession in overtime to try to tie the game, but Jason Clark turned the ball over out of bounds with four seconds to play.
Joseph led all scorers with 29 points, while both Otto Porter (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Hollis Thompson (10 points, 11 rebounds) recorded double-doubles for the Hoyas. Clark added 12 points for Georgetown, while Fab Melo added 11 for Syracuse.

The Georgetown Hoyas came to the Carrier Dome to take on their bitter rivals, the Syracuse Orange. The game went back and forth through much of the first half with the teams trading buckets as the lead bounced back and forth the whole first half. Georgetown took a five point lead at one point, but 'Cuse battled back to tie the game and take the lead before a Hollis Thompson three-pointer gave the Hoyas back the lead.
The Hoyas were able to maintain that lead until halftime, leading 31-27, and significantly out rebounded Syracuse in the first half. If Syracuse can start pulling down some rebounds, the Hoyas might sweat a little bit as the Orange have hung right with them.

The No. 12-ranked Georgetown Hoyas will look to spoil a possible milestone celebration for long-time Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim Wednesday, as the Hoyas visit the No. 2 Orange at the Carrier Dome for a Big East Conference contest (7 p.m. on ESPN).
The Hoyas (18-4, 8-3 Big East) will be searching for their third straight league win, while Boeheim tries for his 880th-career victory, which would put the longtime coach past former North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Dean Smith for third all-time on the Division I list.
On Saturday, the Hoyas earned their second solid victory in as many games by routing the South Florida Bulls, 75-44, at the Verizon Center. The win followed a victory over the visiting Connecticut Huskies, 58-44, last Wednesday.
Georgetown has now earned victories in five of their last six games and are now trying to catch Syracuse for the top spot in the Big East standings, with the second-place Marquette Golden Eagles (9-3) just a half game ahead of the Hoyas.
Overall, senior guard Jason Clark is averaging a team-best 15.0 ppg and shooting a scorching 50-percent from the field, while junior forward Hollis Thompson is second-best with 13.7 ppg.
As of late, senior center Henry Sims has been great as he's averaged 12.8 ppg, 6.8 rebounds per game, 3.4 assists per game and 1.6 blocks per game in the Hoyas' last five games.
Sims is also the only player in the Big East in the top 15 in assists and blocker per game.
Meanwhile, the Orange have rallied off three straight victories after losing their first and only game of the season to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Jan. 21.
On Saturday, Syracuse routed host St. John's Red Storm, 95-70, as it enjoyed the return of sophomore center Fab Melo, who missed the previous three SU contests because of an academic issue that stemmed from the first semester.
Melo tallied a career-best 14 points and added three rebounds and two blocks.

Georgetown Vs. Syracuse: Young Hoyas Fought Hard Against Experienced Orange
The Georgetown Hoyas went up to the Carrier Dome to face one of the best teams in the country on Wednesday and when it was all said and done, they nearly eked out a win. But despite arguably outplaying the Syracuse Orange for much of the contest, the Orange made enough experienced plays to fight them off in overtime. Our Georgetown blog Casual Hoya is bummed about the way it went down, but sees the good in a loss like this.
Georgetown might be highly ranked, but this was a hard game to expect them to win. Syracuse was ranked higher, they had home court and they were the more experienced club. It would have been a pretty big upset if the Hoyas were able to pull out a win, but the loss can still be a learning experience.
