March Madness 2012: VCU Vs. Indiana: Hoosiers Storm Back To Defeat Rams 63-61, Advance To Sweet Sixteen

For the first time since 2002 the Indiana Hoosiers are headed to the Sweet Sixteen. Tom Crean's club scratched and clawed their way back against the VCU Rams and their havoc defense, escaping with a 63-61 win on Saturday night. The No. 4 seed Hoosiers will now head to Atlanta to face the winner of No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 8 Iowa State.

VCU led for virtually the entire second half, forcing the Hoosiers into a season-high 22 turnovers, but a scoring drought of over ten minutes late in the half allowed Indiana to remain in the game, and eventually take the lead. The Rams were nine of 30 from behind the three point line, but shot only 40.4 percent from the floor overall for the game.

Indiana was paced by big man Cody Zeller, who scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Christian Watford added 16 points on four of five shooting from three point land, chipping in five rebounds as well. For the game, the Hoosiers shot 52.2 percent from the field.

The Rams lead the No. 4 seed Indiana Hoosiers 42-41 at the half in their South Regional Round of 32 matchup, courtesy of 12 points and three rebounds from Bradford Burgess and seven points from Troy Daniels.

Both teams are shooting at a ridiculous clip. VCU has made 16 of 29 shots, good for 55.2 percent shooting from the floor. Indiana is an even more obscene 16 of 24 in the half, a 66.7 shooting percentage. VCU has only turned the ball over four times, while Indiana has coughed it up nine times in the first half.

Freshman sensation Cody Zeller has paced the Hoosiers, scoring 10 points on four of four shooting. Guard Victor Oladipo has chipped in four points, three rebounds and five assists for Tom Crean's club. The Hoosiers have 10 assists on their 16 made field goals in the first half.

NCAA Tournament 2012, VCU Vs. Wichita State Recap: Rams Move On With 62-59 Upset Of Shockers

The VCU Rams are back at it, busting brackets everywhere. It was just one year ago that Shaka Smart's club went from First Four to Final Four, and they entered the 2012 NCAA Tournament with confidence and an eye on repeating that magical run. They're off to a good start, scoring a 62-59 upset win over No. 5 seed Wichita State on Thursday night.

It was all about the defensive effort for VCU, as the Shockers averaged more than 77 points per game this season, good enough for 15th in the country. But the Rams held WSU to just 59 points and 38 percent from the field. Bradford Burgess finished with 16 points to lead the Rams, while Darius Theus and Troy Daniels added 10 points in support.

Sloppy play and turnovers in the second half erased a 9-point halftime advantage. At the under four timeout, there was an incredible sequence of four straight three pointers, two on back-to-back possession by Wichita State which gave the Shockers their first lead of the second half at 59-57 with two minutes to go. But Burgess was there to respond, drilling a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Rams the one-point lead. It was the first bucket of the second half for Burgess.

The Rams took a three-point lead an beautiful runner in the lane by Theus, who got a kind bounce off the iron. With 12 seconds remaining, the Shockers would need a three-pointer to tie it at 60, but a Garrett Stutz step-back triple was off the mark and VCU had yet another NCAA upset. They will play the winner of tonight's Indiana and New Mexico State game.

NCAA Tournament 2012, VCU Vs. Wichita State: Rams Step Up On The Defensive End For A 9-Point Halftime Lead

After one half at the Rose Garden in Portland, the No. 12 seed VCU Rams lead Wichita State 34-25. VCU went on a 13-1 run in the final five minutes to build the lead. The Shockers did not have a made field goal over the final five plus minutes. Shaka Smart was pleased with the way it ended but reiterated that the Rams have to continue to lock down in their half court defense over the final 20 minutes to pull off the upset.

The Richmond native and senior Bradford Burgess led the Rams with 13 points, pacing VCU's run at the end of the half. Burgess was just one of five from behind the arc, however, and the Rams shot just 23 percent from deep during the first half. But it was the defensive effort that was all the difference, forcing the Shockers to less than 30 percent from the field. Big man Garrett Stutz had just two points and was relatively quiet against the Rams' front line.

VCU is coming into the tournament with a ton of confidence and looking to repeat their March magic from a year ago. They'll look to continue the defensive effort in the second half for the upset win that could spark another run.
