The No. 7 seed Louisville Cardinals defeated the No. 10 seed Michigan State Spartans 67-55 on Saturday afternoon in College Park, with a familiar face was on the sideline for Louisville. Former Maryland assistant Jeff Walz coached in a game on the College Park campus for the first time in five years, and his team will now take on former boss Brenda Frese and the Maryland Terrapins Monday night in a 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament second round game.
Walz was an assistant under Frese for five season, including being on the bench for Maryland's 2006 national title run. He took the Louisville job in 2007. Walz and his Cardinals have faced Frese and the Terrapins once before, with Louisville defeating Maryland in the 2009 NCAA regional finals.
No. 2 seed Maryland advanced to the second round courtesy of a 59-44 win over No. 15 Navy. The victory was the Terrapins eighth in a row, and eleventh in their last twelve games.
