2012 NCAA Women's Tournament: Hampton Falls To No. 1 Seed Stanford, 73-51

Hampton's attempt to be the second No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the history of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament fell short as the Pirates fell 73-51 to Stanford in Fresno Region action Saturday in Norfolk, Va.

Nnemkadi Ogwumike led the way for Stanford, scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Hampton got within 22-21 after a Choicetta McMillian three-pointer with seven minutes to go before halftime. But the Cardinal went on a 20-6 run to close the first half and took a 42-27 lead into the locker room. Stanford was on cruise control for most of the second half as they held Hampton to 31 percent shooting from the field (20-for-63). By contrast, Stanford shot 58 percent from the floor (29-for-50).

Stanford advances to the second round, where they will play No. 8 seed West Virginia on Monday. The Mountaineers defeated No. 9 seed Texas 68-55 earlier Monday.

2012 NCAA Women's Tournament: Hampton Earns No. 16 Seed, Will Play Stanford

The Hampton University Lady Pirates women's basketball team will open the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament as a No. 16 seed in the Fresno regional after the 2012 Women's NCAA tournament bracket was announced on Monday night.

Hampton will face No. 1 seed Stanford in Norfolk, Virginia. The game is scheduled for March 17 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.

Hampton finished the season with a 26-4 record, including a 15-1 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). They earned an automatic bid to the Big Dance by defeating Howard 54-53 in the MEAC Tournament final.

By playing No. 1 seed Stanford, the Lady Pirates will be looking to match the feat of Harvard, who defeated the Cardinal in a 1 vs. 16 match-up in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Women's Tournament. The Crimson remain the only No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in either the men's or women's tournament.

The rest of Hampton's regional bracket looks like this:

No. 8 West Virginia vs. No. 9 Texas
No. 5 South Carolina vs. No. 12 Eastern Michigan
No. 4 Purdue vs. No. 13 South Dakota State
No. 6 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 Michigan
No. 3 St. John's vs. No. 14 Creighton
No. 7 Vanderbilt vs. No. 10 Middle Tennessee State
No. 2 Duke vs. No. 15 Samford
