Abe Pollin City Title Game 2012: Paul VI Survives Scare From Coolidge, 70-64

Three big shots from George Mason commit Patrick Holloway helped Paul VI stop multiple Coolidge rallies and gave the Panthers a 70-64 win and their first City Title in school history.

Holloway's first big shot came after Coolidge had gone on an 8-0 run to cut their 13-point deficit down to five. Holloway nailed a three from the left elbow to push the lead back to eight, 39-31. The second big shot, another three-pointer, came from behind the NBA line from the right elbow and made the score 53-42.

But the third was the most important of all. With around a minute to play, Coolidge made the score 64-62 on a three from the left corner by Charles McDaniels. A putback of a missed shot by Jamall Robinson made the score 66-62 before Holloway sealed the deal.

After a Coolidge miss, Holloway came downcourt, faked a three from the right elbow to get his man up in the air, stepped inside the line, and canned an 18-footer with 23 seconds to go. That made the score 68-62 and ended any Coolidge hopes of a miracle rally.

Paul VI never trailed in this game as they ran their record to 35-3. They outscored the Colts 44-34 in the paint and doubled Coolidge up on second chance points, 16-8. Holloway and Coleman Johnson each scored 15 points, while Tilman Dunbar and Robinson each added 12.

For Coolidge, Deshaun Morman led the way with 20 points, while Khalen Cumberlander scored 15 and Omar Roberts added 10.

Abe Pollin City Title Game: Woodson Uses Strong 4th Quarter To Defeat Good Counsel, 64-54

H.D. Woodson High School outscored Good Counsel 18-6 in the fourth quarter to win the Abe Pollin Girls' City Title Game 64-54 Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.

The win gave the Woodson girls program its third City Title in five years and its fifth since the girls' game was inaugurated in 1990.

Breonn Hughey led the Warriors with 19 points, while Rahni Bell added 12. Chanel Green and Jephany Brown each recorded 11 points. Faith Randolph led Good Counsel with 16 points, while Sara Woods scored 15.

The first quarter gave no hint of how tight the game would become, as Woodson came out faster and apparently better-adjusted to the relatively cavernous Verizon Center. After conceding the first basket, the Lady Warriors scored 19 of the quarter's final 24 points and led 19-7 after eight minutes.

In the second quarter, Sara Woods brought Good Counsel back into the game almost single-handedly, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds as the Falcons whittled their deficit down to 27-25 at the intermission.

Woods gave the Falcons their first lead of the game when she converted a three-point play in the third quarter to make the score 34-31. But Good Counsel couldn't shake Woodson in a high-scoring third quarter that saw 42 points scored and developed into a shootout between Hughey and Woods.
