Seth Greenberg Fired: Former Assistant James Johnson To Be Hired As Virginia Tech Head Coach, According To Report

A former top assistant to recently-fired Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg will apparently get a crack at the school's head coaching job himself.

WSPA-TV, a CBS affiliate based in the Spartanburg/Greenville area of South Carolina, is reporting that Johnson will leave his assistant coaching position at Clemson to take the head coaching job in Blacksburg.

Johnson left Virginia Tech for Clemson earlier this month, and was the most prominent part of the staff turnover that many believe led to Greenberg's firing by the school on April 23. At the press conference announcing Greenberg's firing, Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver disclosed that the school had offered to match the salary given Johnson by Clemson in an attempt to get him to stay in Blacksburg, but Johnson had turned them down, saying the offer wasn't merely about money.

This will be Johnson's first head-coaching job. He also served as an assistant to Jim Larranaga at George Mason, serving on the staff during the Patriots' 2006 Final Four run.

Seth Greenberg Fired: North Carolina State's Bobby Lutz Draws Interest From Virginia Tech

The search for the new head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team is in full force as officials are looking for the man to replace former head coach Seth Greenberg. One man that officials have talked to is North Carolina State Wolfpack associate head coach Bobby Lutz according to a post by Mark Gianotto of the Washington Post.

One such person is North Carolina State associate head coach Bobby Lutz, who met with Virginia Tech officials Thursday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C., according to multiple people familiar with the coaching search who were granted anonymity to speak freely.

Lutz coached for 12 seasons for the Charlotte 49ers, amassing a 218-158 record with five NCAA tournament appearances. He remains the winningest coach in Charlotte history after being fired from there in 2010.

Other coaches that have reportedly reached out to Virginia Tech, either directly or through a third party, include Loyola, Md. Greyhounds' Jimmy Patsos, American Eagles' Jeff Jones, Eastern Michigan Eagles' Rob Murphy and North Carolina Tar Heels' assistant Steve Robinson.

Seth Greenberg Fired: Dell Curry To Be Considered For Virginia Tech Vacancy, According To Report

During his press conference Monday afternoon, Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver said that he had already been in contact with "some of the biggest names in the business" about potentially replacing the fired Seth Greenberg. At least one name has already been linked to the job, according to CSN Washington's Chick Hernandez.

Curry was a four-year starter at Virginia Tech and still holds the school's all-time mark for steals (295) and is Virginia Tech's second-highest all-time scorer (2,389 points). He went on to play for five different teams in a 16-year NBA playing career.

Curry has no coaching experience at the college or pro level. He was named as an assistant coach of the Charlotte Bobcats in the summer of 2007, but stepped down before the season began so that he could attend his son's college games at Davidson. Steph Curry currently plays for the Golden State Warriors.

Virginia Tech Announces Firing Of Seth Greenberg

Virginia Tech officials announced the firing of men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg Monday afternoon at a press conference in Blacksburg.

"We have terminated Seth Greenberg's contract," Virginia Tech Athletic director Jim Weaver said.

Weaver, who conducted the press conference with Virginia Tech associate athletic director and basketball administrator Tom Gabbard, said that Greenberg had been informed of the decision earlier Monday afternoon. "I think it was safe to say that he was shocked."

Weaver said that he and Gabbard had decided last week not to "enhance" Greenberg's contract, which ran through 2016. Weaver also said that he was concerned at the recent departures by three of Greenberg's assistant coaches from the Virginia Tech staff.

"I did not like the way things unfolded with coaches leaving an ACC program," Weaver said. "To have as many leave as we had sat the wrong way with me."

Earlier this month, Greenberg's top assistant, James Johnson, accepted a position on the staff at Clemson. Johnson was the sixth assistant coach to depart Greenberg's staff in the head coach's four-year tenure. Assistant Rob Ehsan and director of basketball operations Jeff Wulbrun had previously departed for UAB.

"I want to change the leadership such that the person at the top of that program as the same kind of family environment that the other part of his department has," Weaver said. "It became clear to me that we didn't have that in the men's basketball program.

"[Virginia Tech football coach] Frank Beamer has tremendous continuity. Continuity goes a long way toward establishing success. That's what I'd like to see in our entire department."
