The Washington Redskins raised some eyebrows when they drafted former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft after taking Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick, and they've now made that official.
As Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com and NFL Network reported on Twitter this morning:
According to sources, the Redskins have signed 4th RD pick, QB Kirk Cousins to a 4-year contract worth $2.57 million.
— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) May 31, 2012
The Redskins confirmed the signing shortly after Jeremiah's report. Cousins is the all-time leader at Michigan State in completions, passing yards, and touchdowns. He should also be receiving a signing bonus of $472,688.

The Washington Redskins published a press release on Thursday announcing that they have signed fourth round draft pick, linebacker Keenan Robinson whom they drafted from the Texas Longhorns. According to Aaron Wilson of Fox Sports, Robinson signed a four-year deal.
Redskins fourth-round linebacker Keenan Robinson's four-year deal is worth $2.52 million, including a $420,000 bonus, per a league source.
— Aaron Wilson (@RavensInsider) May 17, 2012
While playing for the Longhorns last season, Robinson recorded 106 total tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and a sack. Robinson also was credited with seven pass break ups, 13 quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and a safety. Through his career he was twice named to second team all Big 12 and was named defensive MVP of the 2011 Holiday Bowl.
Signing Robinson gives the Redskins more depth at linebacker. It could also give the Redskins help on the special teams side of the ball.

With the conclusion of Rookie Mini Camp Sunday morning, the Washington Redskins announced the signings of two more draft picks, as running back Alfred Morris and offensive tackle Tom Compton both inked deals.
Morris, a product of Florida Atlantic, was taken with the 173rd overall pick in the draft in the sixth round.
Compton, who was also taken out of the sixth round with the 193rd overall pick, was a highly-regarded prospect ouf of the University of South Dakota. He was named the Great West Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2012 and also played in the 2012 East-West Shrine Game.

With a brief practice Sunday morning, Robert Griffin III and his fellow rookies completed the 2012 Redskins Rookie Mini Camp. After the practice wrapped up, Griffin met with the media where he offered some insight on his first workouts with the team.
Although Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said that Griffin is the team's starter "period", RGIII isn't viewing it that way.
"You go from being top dog at your college to bottom of the barrel in the pros even if you are supposed to be the starting QB."
Griffin also spent the mini camp rooming with fellow rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins. The two spent some study time together, and while the selection of Cousins baffled many, Griffin was told that the Redskins were going to take another quarterback if available in the later rounds.
Those who watched Griffin workout over the past three days say his skills are as advertised, including Washington Examiner columnist Rick Snider who was quick to compare him to a Redskins legend.
Griffin will be practicing with the first team during OTA's, which begin May 21.

The Washington Redskins signed their first two draft picks of their 2012 class by signing seventh-round draft picks cornerback Richard Crawford and safety Jordan Bernstine on Friday.
Crawford played his college football at SMU. He started in 26 of 27 games played while with the Mustangs. During that time, he recorded 106 tackles, posted six interceptions, defended 21 passes and forced two fumbles in his collegiate career.
Bernstine played his college football at Iowa. He made 11 starts, all in his senior year, in the 44 games he played for the Hawkeyes. He finished his college career with 108 tackles, one sack, one interception, three passes defended, and one forced and recovered fumble.
The Redskins do hope that these two players do provide more depth to a secondary that was suspect at times during the 2011 NFL season.

Now that the unprecedented pre-draft excitement around Robert Griffin III has come and gone, it's time for him to do the hard part: End the Redskins' twenty year quarterback carousel.
about 1 year ago Update 0 comments
The analysis regarding the 2012 NFL Draft continues to pour in, as Sports Illustrated now weighs in with their draft grades. The Redskins, despite drafting Robert Griffin III, were only able to scratch out a mediocre B- grade with their draft.
While the folks at SI admire the Redskins move to bring in RGIII, they were less than impressed with the remaining prospects taken including the puzzling selection of Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins.
This draft, and the future of the franchise, rests in Robert Griffin III's hands. They sold out for him, and then had a crummy draft after that top pick - Kirk Cousins in Round 4? Downright baffling, even for the Redskins. Washington tried to address its offensive line, but Josh LeRibeus (71), Adam Gettis (141) and Tom Compton (193) form a collection of subpar options. Grade: B-minus
Of course, it will take time to see if this class can become more or less than the grades dished out to them in the immediate aftermath, but the consensus opinion is that the 'Skins could have done better.

The three day, seven round spectacle that was 2012 NFL Draft concluded around 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday evening, leaving many college players undrafted, unsigned, and eager to ink a deal with a NFL team. Maryland running back Davin Meggett found himself in that mix initially, but reports now indicate Meggett has signed a deal with the Houston Texans.
In pre-draft work, Meggett was favorably compared to Jacquizz Rodgers in terms of field vision and ability to sneak through seams in the defense because of his small stature. Meggett was not the full-time starter for the Terrapins, but did manage to still rush for 896 yards and four touchdowns his senior season at Maryland.

With the 2012 NFL Draft now in the rear-view mirror, it is time to for the annual exercise assessing how each team did in this year's draft, using "grades". We've already taken a look at how Mel Kiper of ESPN and Pete Prisco of CBS Sports graded the Redskins nine player haul, now let's see what the good folks over at SB Nation have to say about Washington's player choices:
Washington Redskins: A-
Robert Griffin III. That's it. Washington's next three drafts will be judged by the success of RG3. They should be fine.
The front office made a good decision to use three of their later picks on offensive linemen. If just one pans out, that helps the young quarterback.
Still can't give this one a perfect grade because of the Kirk Cousins pick. Nothing against Cousins, but why take a second rookie quarterback with a fourth-round pick?
The RGIII Era has officially begun in Washington, D.C. If he becomes the franchise quarterback the Redskins so desperately desire, this draft will go down as one of, if not the, most important drafts in team history.

The 2012 NFL Draft has come and gone, a whirlwind of activity over three days and seven rounds. The Washington Redskins selected nine players in those seven rounds, highlighted of course by grabbing Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.
Now comes the entertaining post-draft analysis period, where winners and losers and draft grades are handed out to teams based on players selected who have yet to ever see the field for a NFL regular season game. Mel Kiper of ESPN has chimed in, now let's see how Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com "grades" the Washington draft:
Washington Redskins
Best pick: Robert Griffin III was their first pick, second overall, but they get props for moving up to make the pick.Questionable move: Why take quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round after taking Robert Griffin III in the first? That's a luxury pick.
Third-day gem: FAU running back Alfred Morris came in the sixth round. Mike Shanahan once drafted Terrell Davis in the sixth round. Morris is smaller than Davis, but has the same type of cutting ability.
Analysis: Getting Griffin was the right thing to do. They have their franchise passer. But they didn't do much after that. They didn't have a second-round pick, but I also don't like what they did with the rest of their picks.
Grade: B-
Mike Shanahan already unearthed two running back gems in late in last year's draft with Roy Helu and Evan Royster, could he really have done it again with Morris?

The 2012 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday evening, with the Washington Redskins having selected nine players over the previous three days and seven rounds. That was not the end of the player acquisition for teams, though. Post-draft there is often a frenzy to ink undrafted free agents, and it appears Washington signed 12 such players since the draft's conclusion.
Here is the full list, via Mike Jones of the Washington Post:
Kelvin Bolden, wide receiver, Southern Miss
Lennon Creer, running back, Louisiana Tech
Grant Garne, center, Oklahoma State
Darius Hanks, receiver, Alabama
D.J. Holt, inside linebacker, Cal
Marcus Hyde, defensive end, William & Mary
Lance Lewis, receiver, East Carolina
Vaughn Metaoga, defensive tackle, Hawaii
Chase Minnifield, cornerback, Virginia
Brian McNalley, defensive end, New Hampshire
Michael Shaw, running back, Michigan
Eain Smith, safety, West Virginia
These 12 players, as well as the Redskins nine draft picks and any unsigned tryout players, will hit the field together for the first time at Redskins' rookie minicamp, May 4-6.

The 2012 NFL Draft officially wrapped on Saturday, with teams using three days and seven rounds to bolster their squads for the upcoming season. The Washington Redskins added nine players in the draft, most notably of course Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.
Now comes the time for instant (over)analysis by pundits. First up to bat, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, who gave the Redskins an overall grade of "C+" for this year's draft.
Summary: If you feel like the grade is a tough one, remember I have to factor in the extraordinary value given up to acquire Robert Griffin III. I've looked, and it's as much as we've ever seen dealt for a top-5 pick. I think RG3 will be a very good player, and I think he can be pretty good right out of the gate, but he's this draft for Washington, and he came at the cost of (likely) three future starters. The pick of another quarterback, Kirk Cousins, obviously created some curiosity. I can see a plan: Washington develops an asset it can deal in a year to regain some draft picks. Is Cousins worth a second-round pick in a year? He could be. It was smart to get a couple of guards, because the offensive line is a weakness outside of Trent Williams. The Redskins got their guy in RG3, they just gave up an extraordinary amount to do so. Only fair to factor that in.
Let's be honest: if Robert Griffin III becomes the franchise quarterback the Redskins so desperately need and desire, this draft will be graded A++ in years to come.

The 2012 NFL Draft came to a close Saturday evening, and by the time three days and seven rounds of selections were comeplete, the Washington Redskins had selected nine players, most notably of course choosing Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick in the draft.
ESPN's Todd McShay broke down the draft, choosing one "impact player" from each draft class, and rather than choose the obvious in RGIII, McShay focused on the Redskins' 119th overall selection in the fourth round, linebacker Keenan Robinson:
Washington Redskins
Impact pick: OLB Keenan Robinson -- Outside of Robert Griffin III, the Redskins likely don't expect to get a lot of contributions from their 2012 class. However, Robinson could provide a little something as a nickel linebacker with freakish athleticism, a player who can cover a lot of ground on defense and contribute on kick coverage.

The three day, seven round affair that was the 2012 NFL Draft wrapped up around 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday evening, leaving many college players unsigned and eager to sign a free agent deal with a club. Former Maryland cornerback Cameron Chism was one such player, and it appears he has found a job rather quickly despite not being drafted. Via Chism's personal twitter feed:
I will be signing with the Indianapolis Colts. Thank you Everybody for the support, thoughts and Prayers! God is Good!

Chism was a second-team All-Met selection in 2007 and started nine games for the Terrapins last season, amassing 47 tackles and three interceptions.

The 2012 NFL Draft has come to a close, and the Washington Redskins have selected nine new players, over seven rounds and three days, of course highlighted by the selection of Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 selection in the draft.
Washington added some depth along the offensive line and in the defensive backfield with the picks, and also made a rather curious move in choosing Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins with the first of their two fourth round picks.
Here is the complete breakdown of the Washington Redskins 2012 NFL Draft Results:
1 (2) - QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor
3 (71) - OG Josh LeRibeus, SMU
4 (102) - QB Kirk Cousins, Michigan State
4 (119) - OLB Keenan Robinson, Texas

The Washington Redskins used their final two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft on defensive backs, choosing Richard Crawford of SMU and Jordan Bernstine of Iowa with the sixth and 10th selections in the seventh round.
Crawford, the 213th overall selection, played cornerback for the Mustangs and has punt return skills that drew the attention of scouts. At pick No. 217 the Redskins selected Bernstine, who is considered a tough and explosive defender but has some issues locating the ball when in the air.
Even if they do not ultimately make the final roster, Crawford and Bernstine will at least provide good competition when training camp begins in the fall.

The Washington Redskins used their second pick in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the 193rd overall pick, to add more depth to the offensive line, selecting 6-foot-5, 314 pound tackle Tom Compton from South Dakota.
Compton started four straight years at South Dakota, and despite being from a small school possesses NFL-ready size and smarts that had some scouts projecting him as a fourth round pick.
Scouts say Compton is quick off the ball, and does a good job in both the run and pass games, effectively getting to the second level and taking on linebackers when needed. His inexperience with high-level competition could be an issue, but it looks like Washington may have gotten themselves a steal late in the sixth round.

With the third pick in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the 173rd pick overall, the Washington Redskins have selectd 5-foot-9, 219 pound running back Alfred Morris from Florida Atlantic.
Morris is considered a tweener at the next level, lacking the true size and speed of high-level NFL running backs. He is a natural runner between the tackles, and blocks well in the backfield.
The major drawback for Morris is again the speed and athleticism. Will Morris be able to find and hit the holes quick enough at the next level to succeed? He will face stiff competition in an already crowded Redskins backfield, where both Roy Helu and Evan Royster excelled at times last season in their rookie campaigns.

Saturday has been an especially active day for the Washington Redskins football organization, particularly when it comes to the quarterback position. The team surprised fans and media alike by selecting Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round, and then an hour later introduced the quarterback of the future at FedEx Field, Baylor's Robert Griffin III. It now appears an incumbent Redskins passer's time has come. Via Chris Russell of 980 AM in Washington, D.C.:

If Cousins was drafted to serve as RGIII's backup, then either Beck or Rex Grossman had to go at some point, so this move should really not come as a surprise.

The Dallas Cowboys used the 17th pick pick in the fifth round, the 152nd overall pick, on Virginia Tech wide receiver Danny Coale.
Coale was a four-year starter for the Hokies and could prove useful in the pros as the prototypical possession receiver. Coale is experienced, explosive within the soft spots of zone defenses, and quick enough to make the first tackler miss before getting up the field. If Coale is to succeed at the next level, it is likely he will thrive on the underneath throws and by sacrificing himself over the middle.

The Washington Redskins have finally addressed needs along the offensive line, selecting guard Adam Gettis from Iowa with the sixth pick in the fifth round, the 141st overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Gettis is undersized for a lineman, at just 293 pounds, but what he lacks in size he makes up with quick feet and smarts along the line, a trait welcome and needed in the Shanahan's blocking scheme. Gettis started full-time only as a senior for the Hawkeyes, so inexperience entering the next level could be a concern. The team will likely also ask Gettis to gain at least 10 to 15 pounds before the season begins so as not to be pushed around by NFL defenders.

With the 119th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins have selected Keenan Robinson, a linebacker from the University of Texas. These NFL Draft 2012 results confirm the projection for Davis, whom many evaluators felt would be taken in the third or fourth round.
As a senior at Texas last season, Robinson recorded 106 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and one sack. He was named second-team All-Big 12 and was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. Robinson has solid speed and is good in the run defense, but doesn't have great strength.
The Redskin's next pick is the 6th pick in the 5th round, number 141 overall.

With the 102nd pick of the 2012 NFL draft, the Washington Redskins have selected Kirk Cousins, a quarterback out of Michigan State. Cousins was considered the fourth or fifth best QB in this season's NFL draft behind the first two overall picks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III along with Ryan Tannehill, so where he was going to be drafted was a bit of a mystery. Most mock drafts had him going around the second round so this selection spot was surprising.
In his final year with Michigan State, Cousins put up 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. A boost to his stock is that he played in a pro system rather than the spread offense which are all the rage in college ball right now.
The Redskins next pick is the 14th selection in the 4th round.

As the 2012 NFL Draft winds down Saturday with selections in Rounds 4 throguh 7, assessments of teams' picks through the first three rounds are gradually hitting the internet. The Washington Redskins, who of course made a huge splash with the selection of Robert Griffin III second in this year's draft, did some wheeling and dealing in the third round, eventually picking offensive lineman Josh LeRibeus with the 71st selection. Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com offers this on LeRibeus:
No. 71: Redskins select: Josh LeRibeus, OG, Southern Methodist
He's a guy who didn't play in 2010 because of academic troubles, but bounced back to play well in 2011. He is a tough guy who will fight and can move -- a must in the Redskins scheme. Grade: C
LeRibeus missed the entire 2010 season after being ruled academically ineligible, but claims to have lost 70 pounds in the interim. The Redskins can use all the offensive line help they can get, so for that reason alone this pick should probably be higher than a "C".

The New York Giants selected Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley with the 94th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Many scouts had projected that Hosley would be drafted on the second day of the draft, but there were concerns that his stock would slide further down after reports indicated that he had tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Hosley had a massive sophomore year in 2010, leading the nation with 10 interceptions. He had to deal with multiple injuries in 2011, as well as a one-game suspension for a curfew violation, and was considerably less productive with three interceptions, but still decided to come out as a junior. Hosley is very fast, but undersized and isn't a top-notch tackler. He has returned punts effectively and might get a chance as a return man in the NFL.

The Washington Redskins did a little bit of wheeling and dealing in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, trading the 69th overall pick to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for the 71st overall pick and the 217th overall pick.
The Redskins used the 71st pick to select guard Josh LeRibeus of Southern Methodist University.
A native of Richardson, Texas, LeRibeus was primarily a left guard for the Mustangs. In 2009, he was an honorable mention member of the All-Conference USA Team. That year, SMU's offense set school records in points and total yards.
LeRibeus missed the entire 2010 season after being ruled academically ineligible and claims to have lost 70 pounds in the interim.

Two local products were selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft in New York City Friday night.
First, the New England Patriots selected Tavon Wilson with the 48th overall pick. Wilson, a D.C. native and a graduate of H.D. Woodson High School, was a two-time Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team member while a member of the Illinois Fightning Illini. The selection of Wilson was a surprise, since most draft analysts had him going undrafted. Wilson is described as a combination corner and free safety, who can help an NFL team with his versatility.
Four picks later, the Tennessee Titans selected Zach Brown with the 52nd overall pick. Brown is a native of Columbia, Maryland and a graduate of Wilde Lake High School and Hargrave Military Academy. Brown was a First-Team All-ACC selection and was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in 2011.

The Washington Redskins got their man with the No. 2 overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Thursday night, taking Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. The guys over at Hogs Haven have been salivating over this pick for weeks now, and now that it's here, they can start thinking about the future.
The Heisman Trophy winner in 2011, Griffin electrified college football last season, throwing for 4,293 yards with 37 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Even better, he completed 72.4 percent of his passes. His accuracy and his arm strength would be good enough reasons to draft him high, but his agility and his athleticism which can stretch plays out make him a potential can't miss prospect.
It won't be long before RGIII is scrutinized for every incompletion and bad decision, so let's just enjoy the honeymoon period now.

With the very last selection of the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Virginia Tech running back David Wilson.
Many scouts thought that Wilson would be drafted in the second round, but a few thought that he was good enough to go late in the first. Wilson enjoyed a breakout year in 2011, when he rushed for 1,709 yards and 9 touchdowns and averaged 5.9 yards per carry in his junior season in Blacksburg. As result of his productive year, Wilson was named the ACC's Offensive Player of the Year.
Wilson is an undersized back at 5 feet, 9 inches and 205 pounds, but he runs with a powerful style that could make him useful in the NFL.

With the second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins have selected Robert Griffin III, a quarterback from the Baylor Bears. The Washington Redskins sacrificed a second round pick this year and two first round picks the next two years, but they certainly hope that Griffin is quarterback they think he can be.
The Heisman Trophy winner for 2011, Griffin electrified college football last season, throwing for 4,293 yards with 37 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Even better, he completed 72.4 percent of his passes. His accuracy and his arm strength would be good enough reasons to draft him high, but his agility and his athleticism which can stretch plays out make him a potential can't miss prospect.

It's official. The Washington Redskins will select Baylor QB Robert Griffin III tonight with the 2nd pick in the NFL Draft. Redskins GM Bruce Allen appeared on the NFL Network's 2012 NFL Draft Kickoff Show and talked about the process of moving up to the 2nd pick and why he's excited to bring Griffin to the nation's capital.
[W]e think that Robert fits our offense to a tee. We’re excited about being able to complement him with what we’ve already been able to do with some of his special talents. Obviously his charisma is going to be embraced by the Redskins Nation.
Washington has been searching for a franchise quarterback for the better part of the last two decades, and Redskins management believe RG3 will be the person to fill that role.
