The Washington Nationals would have to settle for a series win to start their 2012 season. They fell just short of a sweep with a 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Nationals Vs. Cubs Final Score: Late Rally Falls Short As Washington Loses, 4-3

The Washington Nationals could not quite manage a sweep to open their 2012 season. On Sunday, the Nats attempted a late rally, but fell just short to the hometown Chicago Cubs, 4-3

Washington fell behind 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth, but attempted to make a last-ditch comeback in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Ryan Zimmerman reached on a scoring error. Adam LaRoche hit a two-run home run to right field to bring the Nats to within one. Jayson Werth walked, putting the tying run on base, but Xavier Nady popped out in foul territory to end the game and the series.

The Nationals had only four hits in the game, two of which were the double and home run in the ninth inning.

Nationals Vs. Cubs: Starting Lineups For Sunday's Series Finale

The Washington Nationals are looking to begin the season 3-0 for the first time since 2008, but to do so must defeat the Chicago Cubs for a third straight time to begin the 2012 MLB campaign. Washington sends Jordan Zimmermann to the hill, opposed by Chicago's Jeff Samardzija.

First pitch Sunday at Wrigley Field is set for 2:20 p.m. ET. The game can be seen locally on both MASN HD and WDCW DC-50.
