Kentucky Derby 2012 Final Results: Bodemeister Finishes Second, Union Rags Seventh

After a late surge, I'll Have Another managed to dramatically battle it's way to the front of the pack in order to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. After heavily favored Bodemeister led the race for the majority of the run, I'll Have Another made a late surge in the final 300 yards to pull ahead for good.

While the win by I'll Have Another was slightly unexpected, the most surprising result was that heavy favorite Union Rags was barely in contention. Stuck at the back of the pack for much of the race, Union Rags finished in the seventh spot after originally being given a 9-2 odds of winning.

Bodemeister was favored at 6-1 odds and lead for almost the entire race except for the final 300 yards.

Kentucky Derby 2012 Payouts: I'll Have Another Brings In Huge Prices

When I'll Have Another won the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, the earnings that came with it were just as exciting as the race itself. With heavy favorites Union Rags (who was favored at 9-2 odds) and the eventual runner-up Bodemeister (6-1 odds) largely assumed as the winners, few had I'll Have Another penciled in as the winner of the Run of the Roses.

2012 Kentucky Derby Winner: I'll Have Another Steals Win From Favorite Bodemeister

I'll Have Another has won the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. Coming into the race favored at 12-1 odds, I'll Have Another managed to battle up from the 19th starting position to beat out heavy favorite, Bodemeister in the final 300 yards of the race.

Prior to I'll Have Another's dramatic come from behind, Bodemeister was sprinting head-to-head with Trinniberg, arguably the best sprinter in the race. With the favorites being Bodemesiter at 6-1 odds and Union Rags at 9-2 odds, few pointed to I'll Have Another as a possible winner.

Despite this, I'll Have Another reached down deep and played the underdog card to capture the win. It's things like these that endear fans to a winner. I'll have Another has one the first leg of the triple-crown series.

Here's how the race played out:

2012 Kentucky Derby: Storms Cancel Morning Training

After a night of heavy rain and thunderstorms, Churchill Downs track superintendent Butch Lehr cancelled this morning's scheduled training and it's 13-race card.

The Huffington Post has the story on this morning's cancellations and how the weather could potentially affect today's race:

Butch Lehr (LEE'-ehr) made the decision early in the morning as crowds began to line up outside the historic Louisville track. Saturday is the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.

The main track, which is dirt, was labeled sloppy at 8 a.m. EDT. The Derby will be run at 6:24 p.m. EDT, with the National Weather Service calling for mostly cloudy skies, a high near 85 and a 50 percent chance of pop-up rain.

2012 Kentucky Derby Odds: Union Rags The Favorite, Maryland's Done Talking Still A Longshot

The 138th annual Kentucky Derby is set for this afternoon at 5 ET and according to CBS.com this morning, Union Rags is now the favorite to win. Here's the quote:

A random selection of horse racing experts picked the No. 2 horse in the Kentucky Derby's morning line (9-2 odds) to win the first leg of the Triple Crown, but the Run for the Roses is anything but predictable

Bodemeister was the favorite when the post positions were unveiled earlier in the week, but he has since fallen out of the top 3 according to the general consensus of CBS's experts. Maryland based horse Done Talking is still at 50-1 to win this afternoon's race. For the most updated odds on this afternoon's race, check out KentuckyDerby.com.

Kentucky Derby 2012 Betting Guide: How To Bet On The Horses

If you've ever wanted to get in on the betting action on the Kentucky Derby, here is a guide that explains how to become a savvy horse racing gambler.

Matt Gardner of SB Nation has put together a nice betting guide that explains just how to play your money smart. For starters, you need to find a site to place your money safely. If your state allows internet horse race gambling, sites such as TwinSpires.com, TVG.com and ExpressBet.com. Now that you have a place to bet, you need to make one. As Gardner explains, there are three different bets you can make on the race

WIN: A bet on a horse to win (if you don't know this you probably shouldn't be betting)
PLACE: A bet on a horse to finish either 1st or 2nd.
SHOW: A bet on a horse to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Gardner's article linked above also explains more complex bets that can stretch across multiple races. Now you need to pick a horse to place your money on. Those numbers you always see next to a horses name are the odds that the horse will win. Here is a chart that spells out the various odds.

To figure you how much you'll get paid if you hit your win bet, simply divide the numerator of the odds by the denominator, multiply that number by the amount bet, and then add the amount bet. For example if you took the Maryland-based horse Done Talking at 50-1 odds to win with a $2 and it does, your payout would be....

$50 x 2 + $2 = $104

Place and Show payouts are more difficult to calculate since tracks don't display the odds on those bets. Usually, they pay less than half what the winning odds play (unless the horse is a huge longshot and the favorite doesn't finish in the top three).

So that, in a nutshell, is how betting works for horse racing. Again, if you would like a more in-depth overview, head over to the guide by Gardner.

2012 Kentucky Oaks: Severe Weather Delaying Races

The traditional running of the Kentucky Oaks on the eve of the Kentucky Derby are being delayed due to a severe weather system rolling through Louisville, Kentucky Friday evening.

The weather system appears to be a nasty one according to the radar images from Brad Panovich of WCNC-TV, and the infield and grandstands were evacuated due to fears of high winds associated with the storms.

Screen_shot_2012-05-04_at_4

The storm is expected to pass through in enough time to allow the races to continue, although the rain will cause sloppy track conditions. As for tomorrow's Derby, there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms with the possibility of severe weather.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Jockey Robby Albarado Arrested On Assault, Replaced For Kentucky Oaks

Jockey Robby Albarado, who has participated in eight Kentucky Derby races, was arrested for assualt on Friday according to Barbara Borden, the Acting Chief State Seward.

Albarado had been expected to mount Hard Not To Like in the Kentucky Oaks race, the fillies-only version of the Kentucky Derby. Because of this arrest, he will not participate in the Oaks.

While he does not currently have a mount for the Kentucky Derby, there is always the possibility that a horse could wind up open on Derby day and he could ride then. However this assault charge could torpedo those plans.

The Derby is scheduled for a post time of 6:24 p.m. from Churchill Downs in Lexington, Ky. There will be massive TV coverage on NBC Sports Network prior to the running and NBC will have the broadcast of the race.

2012 Kentucky Derby Post Positions: Done Talking Starts On Gate 17

The post positions for the 2012 Kentucky Derby were revealed on Wednesday during a ceremony at Churchill Downs. The post position draw is important for the Kentucky Derby as chances for contenders can be dictated a bit by where they start the race on Saturday.

Maryland based colt Done Talking received the No. 17 draw, starting the Derby on the far outside. This can be a big detriment for a horse and jockey because it can make the race a bit longer than horses starting on the rail or in the middle of the pack.

The draw is as follows:

1. Daddy Long Legs
2. Optimizer
3. Take Charge Indy
4. Union Rags
5. Dullahan
6. Bodemeister
7. Rousing Sermon
8. Creative Cause
9. Trinniberg

11. Alpha
12. Perspective
13. Went The Day Well
