Chien-Ming Wang Replaces Ross Detwiler In Washington Rotation

Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced a change to the Washington rotation after Saturday's game against the Braves. Via Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post:

Chien-Ming Wang will replace Ross Detwiler in the Nationals' rotation, Manager Davey Johnson said, a decision Johnson based on Wang's track record and Detwiler being better suited to pitch in relief.

"It's a tough decision, but I think it's best for the whole ball club," Johnson said.

The Nationals original plan out of spring training was to have Wang slotted fifth in the rotation, but a strained hamstring led to the veteran righty missing the first seven weeks of the season. Detwiler was 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA as a starter this year, and will now become a lefty asset in a bullpen that has undergone some recent shuffling,

Nationals Vs. Braves: Washington Looks To Sweep Atlanta

The Washington Nationals (28-18) have an opportunity to sweep the Atlanta Braves (26-22) after taking the first two games of the three game series. It looks to be a pitching deul, with Gio Gonzalez (6-1, 1.98 ERA) pitching for the Nationals, with Brandon Beachy (5-2, 1.77 ERA) throwing for the Braves.

Gonzalez has won four straight, striking out nine in six scoreless innings in Monday's 2-1 victory over the Phillies. Beachy has the lowest ERA in the league, and his .183 opponent batting average is third in the league, behind Gonzales and Justin Verlander of the Tigers.

The Washington offense has found its stride against the struggling braves, scoring 15 runs in the first two games of the series to hand the Braves their fifth and sixth straight losses. If

Nationals Vs. Braves Recap: Washington Roughs Up Tim Hudson In 7-4 Win

The Nationals successful tour through the NL East continued on Friday night with a series opening win in Atlanta. The Nats jumped on Tim Hudson early, staking Ross Detwiler a 4-run lead with a first inning rally. But Detwiler was relatively inefficient, throwing a lot of pitches and getting yanked in the fifth inning for Chien-Ming Wang's first appearance. Wang promptly surrendered a two-run double to Matt Diaz but he settled in after that, getting the ball to Sean Burnett in the 8th.

The Diaz double cut the Nats lead to just one in the fifth inning, and it appeared Tim Hudson was cruising after the rocky first inning. But Washington put together a huge rally in the seventh to push the lead back to four. The big hit was delivered by Ryan Zimmerman, who ripped a double to the wall in center to clear the bases and score three. The rally started with Hudson inexcusably walking Wang. A Stephen Lombardozzi double was sandwiched with another walk to Bryce Harper, setting things up for Zimmerman to come through in the clutch.

Washington will try to take the series on Saturday with Stephen Strasburg on the hill. Mike Minor will go for Atlanta.

Nationals Vs. Braves Score Update: Washington Strikes Early With 4-Run 1st Inning

The Washington Nationals' offense broke out early to start their weekend series against the Braves. The Nats got to Tim Hudson with a two-out rally in the first inning, posting four runs against the veteran righty. Bryce Harper singled to center to start the rally, and he was quickly moved to third on a Ryan Zimmerman double to deep centerfield.

With two outs, Ian Desmond came to the batters' box and took advantage of the two runners in scoring position. Desmond is one of the hottest hitters in the game right now and he put the bat on a patented Hudson sinker to send a grounder up the middle which brought home both Harper and Zimmerman.

Hudson was clearly not sharp at the start and he hit the very next batter, Danny Espinosa. Keeping the two-out rally alive, Rick Ankiel tripled on a fly ball to left that Matt Diaz could not get to. Both Desmond and Espinosa came home to make it 4-0. Hudson regrouped in the second inning and worked a brief 1-2-3 inning but Washington starter Ross Detwiler now has a four-run cushion to work with.
