NCAA Baseball Tournament 2012, Charlottesville Regional: Oklahoma Holds Off Virginia, 5-4

The Oklahoma Sooners led most of the way in their Charlottesville Regional game with the University of Virginia, but a ninth inning rally by the host Cavaliers fell short as Oklahoma advanced past Virginia by a final score of 5-4.

The Sooners entered the top of the ninth inning with a 5-1 run when Keith Werman started the ninth inning rally with an RBI single from the bottom of the lineup that brought in Nate Irving to cut the score to 5-2.

From there, the next two UVA batters would get on base (Chris Taylor and Colin Harrington) and Stephen Bruno would bring them home with an RBI double to cut the score to 5-4. But that's where the rally would unfortunately end and the Cavaliers would find themselves coming up just a tad bit short.

With the loss, Virginia is now eliminated from the tournament and the Sooners will move on to play the 2-0 Appalachian State Mountaineers in the Regional final.

NCAA Baseball Tournament 2012, Charlottesville Region: Appalachian State Stuns Virginia, 6-5

The Virginia Cavaliers suffered a crushing loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers Sunday afternoon and now find themselves just one loss away from elimination.

The Mountaineers won the game 6-5 and thwarted late rallies by the Cavaliers. Appalachian State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, when Will Callaway came through with an RBI double. App State broke the game open in the bottom of the second when they added on five runs highlighted by Daniel Kassouf's two-run double.

Virginia would chip away at the lead, taking advantage of four Mountaineers errors thorughout the contest to get back into the game. They scored three runs in the top of the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, however Ryne Frankoff and Nathan Hyatt pitched scoreless innings down the stretch to preserve the win.

There is not much time for Virginia to dwell on the loss, as they will play Oklahoma Sunday night with the loser's season coming to an end.

NCAA Baseball Tournament 2012, Charlottesville Region: Oklahoma Eliminates Army In Extra Inning Thriller

The Army Black Knights saw their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, as the Oklahoma Sooners scratched out a 2-1 win in 10 innings over the Knights in the Charlottesville Region Sunday morning.

Army struck first in the bottom of the fifth when Zach Price singled home a run. Oklahoma countered with a run in the top of the sixth when Evan Mistich scored Max White on an RBI groundout. The pitchers duel continued into the 10th inning when the Sooners finally pushed home the winning run when White came through with an RBI single. An error in the bottom of the 10th gave the Black Knights a chance to rally, but they could not take advantage of it.

Oklahoma starter Jonathan Grey went seven innings, allowing just the one run on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. In relief, Steven Okert went the remaining three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up the win.

Army starter Logan Lee also had an incredible game, going seven innings and allowing just two hits, four walks and one run. Gunnar Carroll got the loss, tossing the last three innings and allowing one run on three hits.

2012 College Baseball Tournament, Appalachian State Vs. Oklahoma: Mountaineers Grab 5-4 Win In Makeup Game

In the first-ever meeting between the schools, Appalachian State upended Oklahoma, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field. To a large degree, credit Ryan Arrowood for that.

The Appalachian State starter lasted seven and two-third innings, allowing just two hits, three walks and one run. Moreover, he struck out nine batters, to help the Mountaineers work their way to an 3-0 lead through the first seven innings of Friday's makeup game. The Mountaineers, the No. 3 seed in the regional, were originally scheduled to face the Sooners at 8 p.m. EST the day prior.

Things did get much closer during the bottom of the ninth inning. Trailing 5-1, Oklahoma marched out, totaling four runs over the course of the inning to narrow the lead to just one run. But with a runner on second with two outs, Max White flied out and the Mountaineers preserved the win.

2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament, Army Vs. Virginia Score Update: Cavaliers Lead 3-1 After Six Innings

Virginia and Army resumed their first round action in the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA Baseball tournament Saturday and the Cavaliers took a 3-1 lead after six innings.

Army sort of gave Virginia the opportunities to record a three-run second inning with a series of wild pitches and hit batters to advance some Cavaliers around the base paths.

Brandon Downes had a double in the second and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Branden Cogswell was hit by a pitch to score Downes and Virginia scored the first run of the game.

Junior third baseman Stephen Bruno added a two-RBI single to center field, which gave the Cavs a 3-0 lead.

Army scored a run in the sixth inning, but haven't been able to get much going on the scoreboard despite have six hits compared to Virginia's three, due to the pitching situation in the second inning.

2012 NCAA Men's Baseball Tournament: Oklahoma Vs. Appalachian State Game Time, TV Schedule, And More

The second game of the day at the Charlottesville Regional will feature No. 2 seed Oklahoma against No. 3 seed Appalachian State. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Sooners enter with a record of 38-22 after their typically strong season in the Big 12 which ended with a loss in the conference tournament title game. Oklahoma will be UVA's strongest competition in the regional, and they have one of the better pitching staffs in Division 1 with a .258 opponents' batting average.

While Oklahoma is one of the blue bloods and a threat to make it to Omaha every year, this is Appalachian State's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1986. The game is set to start 50 minutes after the conclusion of the first game between Virginia and Army, with an estimated start time between 2 and 2:30 p.m. ET. The games were moved up to from Friday night to Friday afternoon to avoid heavy storms which were in the forecast for the Charlottesville area.

The game will not be available on television and will not be streamed online.

Game Date/Time: Friday, 50 minutes after conclusion of UVA vs. Army -- estimated for 2-2:30 p.m. ET

2012 NCAA Men's Baseball Tournament: Virginia Vs. Army Game Time, TV Scheduled, And More

Danny Hultzen is gone, but the Virginia Cavaliers have reloaded with young talent, and could make a run towards Omaha with their talented roster. They started slow because of their loss of pitching, but finished hot to pick up a top seed. Because of that top seed, UVA host the Army Black Knights in Charlottesville on Friday. Storms are expected during the late afternoon and evening, so games have been moved up and play will start in the morning.

Branden Kline is expected to take the mound for UVA. He's second among the regular starters in ERA, but he was far and away the team's leader in strikeouts and innings in 2012. Stephen Bruno, Derek Fisher and Jared King lead a strong Cavaliers lineup against the winners of the Patriot League tournament title.

Unfortunately for fans of Virginia, Army and college baseball in general, there is no television coverage or internet streaming of Friday's games in the Charlottesville regional.
