French Open Results: Serena Williams Upset In First Round

Stay connected for news and updates

Serena Williams, the No. 5 women's player in the world, lost in the first round of the French Open at Roland Garros Tuesday, falling to France's Virginie Razzano in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.

This is the very first time that Serena has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament in her amazing career. While she missed the French Open last year while recovering from a foot injury and a pulmonary embolism, the earliest that she has ever been eliminated in the French Open was the third round in 1999 and 2008. In three of Williams' last four French Opens, she had reached at least the quarterfinals.

Williams hopes that she will be able to rebound from this disappointing loss at Roland Garros and play strong at Wimbledon this summer.
