D.C. United opened the U.S. Open Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 win in extra time over the Richmond Kickers.

D.C. United won their first match of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, defeating the Richmond Kickers 2-1 at Richmond City Stadium. D.C. United needed extra time to advance, as Marcelo Saragosa buried the game-winning goal in the 107th minute.

DCU controlled possession for much of the match, and Hamdi Salihi scored the first goal at the 24-minute mark. Maicon Santos set up the goal with a beautiful feed, hitting Salihi in stride. The Kickers evened things up just before the half, when Saragusa was whistled for a penalty in the box as he took down Chris Agorsor. Stanley Nyazamba took the penalty kick and converted the equalizer, as DCU goalie Joe Willis went the wrong way.

But Saragosa would win the match in extra time. The game-winner came off a corner from Branko Boskovic, which fell to the Brazilian midfielder after a failed clear attempt by Richmond.

D.C. United moves on to play the Philadelphia Union at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. The Union defeated Rochester 3-0 to advance in the 64-team tournament. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5.
