The Virginia Tech Hokies were ranked in the top 25 of an SB Nation preseason poll. What do the Hokies have coming back for the 2012 season?
The Virginia Tech Hokies are still stinging from their 23-20 Sugar Bowl loss to the Michigan Wolverines in January. As the new season dawns, the brand new college football polls are trickling out. The Hokies are currently ranked at No. 17 in the SB Nation Preseason BlogPoll.
The Hokies are returning nine starters on defense from 2011, but only three on offense. All told, they lost four offensive linemen to protect returning quarterback Logan Thomas as well as two wide receivers. Thomas did impress during the season with his athletic abilities, finishing the season with 3,013 passing yards, 19 touchdown and 10 interceptions while completing close to 60 percent of his passes.
Thomas also accounted for 11 rushing touchdowns last season, so the Hokies do have an offensive threat under center. It will be up to the newcomers on the offensive side of the ball to see how far the Virginia Tech offense can take them.
The Virginia Cavaliers, who made it to their first bowl game since 2007 also received votes in the poll, but not enough to crack the top 25.
