French Open Results: Four Men's Matches Go Five Sets, No. 3 Women's Player Upset

It has been a very active day at Roland Garros in third round action of the French Open on Friday afternoon. Four men's matches have all gone five sets with three of them matching up two internationally ranked players. On the women's side of the tournament, the No. 3 ranked player was upset in straight sets.

Probably the most demanding match of the day was won by No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland over No. 11 Gilles Simon of France. This match featured two tie breakers, both won by Simon, but Wawrinka persevered and won the match 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3. 6-2. No. 7 Tomas Berdych won a five-set thriller over No. 31 Kevin Anderson, No. 22 Andreas Seppi went the distance, defeating No. 14 Fernando Verdasco and No. 20 Marcel Granollers played a full match against Malek Jaziri before coming out on top.

No. 3 ranked Roger Federer got a bit of a scare against Frenchman Nicholas Mahut, trailing in the fourth set, but he came back and won his record 235th Grand Slam match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Other men's winners include No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro and David Goffin.

No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic currently leads his opponent Nicolas Devilder after winning the first set 6-1.

On the women's side, No. 2 Maria Sharapova won her second round match, delayed from yesterday, against Ayumi Morita in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

The biggest upset of the day was No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland losing to No. 26 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Other winners on the day include No. 6 Samantha Stosur, No. 13 Ana Ivanovic and No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova. Sloane Stevens of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. also advanced to the fourth round, defeating Mathilde Johansson, 6-3, 6-2.

No. 1 ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus is currently facing Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in her third round match as are No. 10 Angelique Kerber of Germany and No. 18 Flavia Pennetta of Italy.
