Although it came down to the wire, TIger Woods was able to edge Bo Van Pelt by two strokes to win the 2012 AT&T National at Congressional.
The two golfers entered the day tied at 6-under and remained deadlocked for most of the afternoon until the 17th hole when a bad drive and approach by Van Pelt opened the door for Woods who pared the hole while Van Pelt shot a bogey. Woods then held off Van Pelt on the 18th to clinch the title with a score for the tournament of 8-under.
This is the third win for Woods on the PGA Tour this year as he has also won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Memorial Tournament.

The leaders are heading down the homestretch at the 2012 AT&T National at Congressional, and Tiger Woods and Bo Van Pelt are in a tight race for the title, as the two are tied at minus nine through 15 holes.
Both golfers began the day at minus six and charged to the front of the pack early on in their rounds. With both tied at minus eight, Woods took the lead with this impressive shot to regain momentum, but Van Pelt stayed cool to also shoot a birdie on the hole to keep the scores tied.
The two continue to go at it, with a dramatic finish very much in the works.

Tiger Woods has begun his final round at Congressional and still holds a share of the lead over the field as he sits atop the leaderboard with Bo Van Pelt with a score of minus seven through six holes. Woods is minus one on the day and has yet to bogey a hole.
He is facing a field full of competitors that are charging toward the top of the leaderboard, led by Adam Scott, who has exploded on Sunday to minus six. He began the day just one under par but is minus five on Sunday. Brandon de Jong is also just a stroke behind Woods and has been remaining steady at minus six all afternoon.

Intense storms on Friday evening in the Washington metro area caused serious damage and knocked power out for hundreds of thousands of local residents. It also kept spectators off the grounds of the Congressional County Club for the third round of the 2012 AT& T National. As things have begun to return to normal in neighborhoods, it appears the course is in better shape now as well, and fans will once again be allowed in.

In 2009, the last time the AT&T National was played at the Blue Course at Congressional, Tiger Woods won the tournament, fairly easily. After shooting 4-under 67 on Saturday, he might be in position to do so again. Woods is tied for second through 54, just one stroke back of the leader Brendon de Jonge, who fired a 69 in the third round.
"I started off five back, and I needed to make a run," Woods told reporters afterwards. "Whether we have thousands of people or we have a small handful of people out there, it doesn't change the execution of the shot. The shot needs to be placed correctly in the fairway and on the correct side and then fired to the correct spot on the green and then holed. That doesn't change anything.
Joining Woods one stroke back of de Jonge are Bo Van Pelt and Seung-Yul Noh, who shot 67 and 69, respectively, on Saturday. Another stroke beind was Billy Hurley III and Hunter Mahan.

After inclement weather trashed the course and the viewing public were barred from the 2012 AT&T National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., the third round did take place as planned even though tee times were pushed back to 1 P.M., EST.
Zinbabwe's Brendan de Jong is your leader through the front nine as he's -2 par on the day and -7 in the event. But Bo Van Pelt and Tiger Woods are right on his heels.
Van Pelt is four-under par after 10 holes and six-under in the tournament while Tiger Woods is also four-under par through 10 holes and six-under as well.
Another American, Hunter Mahan, is also six-under par through the first three rounds but is also one-over par on the day thus far.

The second round of the 2012 AT&T National is in the books and Hunter Mahan surged to the lead after firing a 65 on a scorching Friday afternoon. Mahan is coming off a ridiculous final round last week in Hartford, where he fired a 61 early on Sunday to charge up the leaderboard. Playing early in a similar circumstance, he went low at Congressional three years ago when he carded a 62 in his final round to challenge Tiger Woods. Cameron Tringale matched Mahan with a 65 of his own, but the Oklahoma State product and two-time 2012 winner Mahan is 7-under and two shots clear of a trio in second.
Brendon de Jonge, Jimmy Walker, and Robert Garrigus are all at 5-under. Garrigus is the bomb-and-gouger who put together a solid week at Congressional last year finishing T3. Despite being dusted by Rory McIlroy, Garrigus took a lot away from that week and was extremely happy with how he played the course. His comfort on the track has been evident again this week.
Amateur Beau Hossler made the weekend after a second round 74 put him at 3-over for the tournament. The 17-year-old sensation who stormed onto the scene at Olympic two weeks ago received an exemption from Tiger Woods and has handled himself well the first two days. Hossler struggled on the back side, playing the first three holes in four over after carding a double on the difficult par-3 10th but he hung in there to make the cut. Patrick Cantlay, the former amateur superstar, made his first cut since turning professional after the Open. He was another player who impressed here last year but he's currently eight shots back at 1-over.
One notable name to miss the cut was Tiger's playing partner and 2007 winner K.J. Choi. Camilo Villegas and Kelly Kraft, the reigning amateur champ who defeated Cantlay at Erin Hills last year, also missed the weekend.

With triple digit temperatures beating down on the field at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, the second round is well underway and tournament host Tiger Woods is climbing his way up the leaderboard. In the second round, Woods shot a three-under 68 on the round to move to two-under for the tournament, three strokes behind current leaders Robert Garrigus, Brendon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker.
Garrigus earned a share of the lead after shooting a four-under 67 in the second round. Walker and de Jonge hit two-under 69s to improve on their three-under rounds from Thursday.
Rod Pamperling also shot a 67 in the second round and stands one shot behind the leaders with a four-under for the tournament. Vijay Singh has only just started his second round and stands two strokes behind the leaders. As of right now, the projected cut is at four-over for the tournament.

The second round of the AT&T National will start bright and early on River Road Friday morning, with first round leader Bo Van Pelt off No. 1 with the first tee time at 7 a.m. ET. Congressional is playing the way Mike Davis and the USGA had hoped it would one year ago for the U.S. Open, firm and fast with dried out conditions. Only seven players broke 70 on the first day, led by Van Pelt's 67.
Golf Channel will broadcast the second round from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon. One of the featured groups to follow in the afternoon will be Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan, and Davis Love III. All three are under par after solid early rounds on Thursday. Mahan lit it up early on Sunday three years ago at Congressional, firing a 62 that put a scare in eventual winner Tiger Woods.
Tiger is set to tee off a 7:50 a.m. ET alongside Nick Watney and K.J. Choi. They will go off No. 10 with that unorthodox and difficult par-3 tee shot over water to start their round.

The first round of the AT&T National is complete, and so far Congressional Country Club in Bethesda has proven to be a much tougher test then it was for last year's U.S. Open.
Bo Van Pelt is the solo overall leader after he shot a 4-under par 67 on Thursday. By contrast, eventual champion Rory McIlroy carded a 65 after his first 18 holes at Congressional in 2011. Three-time major winner Vijay Singh is one of three golfers a stroke behind at 3-under. (Jimmy Walker and Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge are the others.)
The local favorite is Billy Hurley III, who shot a 2-under 69. Hurley, who was born in Leesburg, Va., is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and still lives in Annapolis.
Tournament host Tiger Woods shot a 1-over par 72 to put him five shots behind Van Pelt. Woods birdied the 9th and 14th holes, but bogeyed the 4th, 11th, and the 15th to finish the day outside the red numbers.

The 2012 AT&T National begins play this week on Thursday from Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The field was finalized on Friday evening, with event host Tiger Woods, the No. 4-ranked player in the world, and No. 10-ranked Hunter Mahan highlighting the field. There will be an infusion of youth at this year's tournament, though, that should draw the interest of fans as well. 17-year-old Beau Hossler, fresh off his strong performance at the 2012 U.S. Open, was invited to participate in the tournament, as well as two other promising youngsters.
Via Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post:
Hossler is one of several prominent, precocious players who will try to handle Congressional, which hosts the AT&T National for the first time since 2009. (The tournament moved to suburban Philadelphia for two years so Congressional could prepare for and host the 2011 U.S. Open.) Jordan Spieth, a freshman at the University of Texas - where Hossler is committed to play after his high school graduation in 2013 - will be there just two weeks after beating Hossler to take low amateur honors at the Open. Patrick Cantlay, a 20-year-old who turned pro last week following his sophomore year at UCLA, was also invited.
The complete field can be found at the AT&T National page on PGATour.com.

Other notable participants include Hunter Mahan, the No. 10-ranked player in the world, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk. Beau Hossler, the 17-year-old high schooler who took last week's U.S. Open by storm, will also tee off at Congressional this week.
