U.S. Open 2012 Leaderboard: Amateur Beau Hossler Captivates Fans With Impressive Run

As always, there are great stories that come from events such as the U.S. Open. One of the best to come from The Olympic Club this weekend has been the emergence of 17-year-old amateur Beau Hossler.

After leading for a short time on Friday, the braces-wearing teenager has hung around in contention after shooting even par on Saturday and enters the final day of competition four strokes off the lead and ahead of legendary players such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

His run has been fun to watch for all involved including his caddy, Bill Schellenberg who described what the weekend has been like for him to the USA Today.

"He has really good resolve. The kid doesn't quit. It's just awesome," Schellenberg said. "He has an unbelievable ability to get upset, get it out and get it over with and get onto the next shot. I don't know what it looked like, but he and I were having a grand time."

Hossler is looking to become the third different amateur to win the U.S. Open. He tees off for his final round at approximately 5:20 p.m. ET.

U.S. Open 2012 Results: Jim Furky, Graeme McDowell Take Lead As Tiger Woods Struggles

Tiger Woods entered Saturday in a three-way tie for first place. He left tied for 14th after finishing 5-over par, bogeying two of his final three holes and falling, in some ways, out of contention at the U.S. Open in San Francisco.

As Woods failed to maintain his place atop the leaderboard, Jim Furky and Graeme McDowell, the tournament's 2010 winner, too advantage shooting 68 and 70, respectively, to main a two-stroke lead at 1-under par through three rounds. Coming in at third was Fredrik Jacobson, who also shot a 68 on Saturday at the difficult course at The Olympic Club.

2012 U.S. Open: Amateur Beau Hossler Sits Near Top Of Leaderboard After Three Rounds

Perhaps, other than Tiger Woods of course, the biggest story of the U.S. Open thus far has been the play of Beau Hossler, a 17-year-old amateur from Mission Viejo, Calif. After three rounds, Hossler is still in contention, shooting an even-par 70 on Saturday to stay 3-over par, finishing, as of now, tied for seventh in the field.

"I feel like today I've even put myself in position to win the championship if I play well," he told reporters afterward.

Hossler certainly looked focus on Saturday. He bogeyed on four holes, but followed up each one with a birdie, canceling them out. And with a good showing in the final round on Sunday, he could very well become the first amateur to win the tournament in decades.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Tiger Woods Trails Leader By Three Strokes

Tiger Woods is still in it. Though shooting 3-over par through 12 holes on day three on Saturday at the U.S. Open, Woods trails his playing partner Jim Furyk by just three strokes.

The front nine was a bit rough. Woods bogeyed four holes over the first nine holes, with his worst coming on the 8th hole, missing a short put with a chance for birdie. Woods shot a 69 and 70 over the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Trailing Furyk and tied for second are Graeme McDowell and Nicolas Colsaerts, who are both even over the tournament thus far.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Casey Wittenberg Shoots A 67 In Round 3

Memphis, TN native Casey Wittenberg may have figured out the course at The Olympic Club during the 2012 U.S. Open. After giving golfers trouble for the past two days, Wittenberg turned in the best performance thus far with a 67 on the day to move him to -3 under par, giving him the lead after three rounds.

Wittenberg shot a 71 on day one and a 77 on day two.

He bogeyed just two holes on Saturday -- the first and the sixth -- while making birdie on three holes, even connecting for an eagle on the par four seventh hole.

While there are still golfers still playing the course, including Tiger Woods, Wittenberg's remarkable turnaround may not be outdone.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Steve LeBrun Showing Improvement In Round 3

Seven golfers have completed the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club on Saturday, but only one has shown improvement over the first two rounds.

Florida native Steve LeBrun shot a 73 in round one and a 75 in round two, but followed up Friday's disappointment by shooting a 69 in round three, good for -1 under par and tying him for the lead. Of course that's a bit misleading considering Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and David Toms are all tied fore the lead and tee off later.

Amateur Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler both shot a +1, 71 in the third round while Kevin Streelman shot a +2, 72 on Saturday.

The highest scores thus far belong to Jim Ogilvie and Bo Van Pelt who both shot a +6, 76 on the day.

2012 U.S. Open Scores And Results: Only 6 Of 156 Players Under Par After 1st Round

The first round of the 2012 U.S. Open is in the books, and only six of the 156 golfers are in red numbers and under par. As expected, the Olympic Club was the winner on Thursday, playing firm and fast and yielding few birdies with plenty of bogeys, and often worse. The leader is Michael Thompson, who tied Payne Stewart for the lowest U.S. Open first round at Olympic with a 66. Thompson qualified at nearby Woodmont in Rockville, and he played incredibly well in his fourth appearance in a major.

After Thompson, it's a set of five familiar names at 1-under. The most familiar of them all, Tiger Woods, played his most impressive round of golf in two years. He had total control over his game, shaping the shots he wanted and controlling the trajectory he needed. He hit high cuts and low draws at the right times. Woods also had a low stinger working off the tee, which kept the ball in play throughout the round. It was a performance that has to have the rest of the field concerned.

Tied with Woods at 1-under is former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell. The Northern Irishman won just south of Olympic two years ago, but has not been in his best form of late. Nick Watney is also at 1-under, with his round buoyed by an incredible double eagle at the par-5 17th hole. It was just the third double eagle in U.S. Open history and brought him from 3-over to even in one swing.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Tiger Woods Finishes 1-Under, Michael Thompson Leads

The Olympic Club is proving to be an absolutely brutal course for those who teed off on Thursday morning, but Tiger Woods posted a very solid first round score that he can build on going into Friday. He finished one-under par, which due to the tough course conditions is currently good for a tie for second place.

Woods is part of a group of players who sit at one-under who are trailing Michael Thompson. His four-under par round ties Payne Stewart for the best ever first round at a U.S. Open. Thompson was one of seven players who qualified for the U.S. Open through the qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.

Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, Woods' group mates, had terrible days. Watson finished nine-over par, while Mickelson finished six-over. Most of golf's biggest names have yet to tee off, and might have a slightly easier time with the course this afternoon. Seven of the world's top-10 ranked golfers -- Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose, Jason Dufner and Dustin Johnson -- have yet to tee off. Westwood and Johnson both won the events that they played in last week.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Leaderboard: Tiger Woods Even, Phil Mickelson And Bubba Watson Struggling

The first round of the U.S. Open from the Olympic Club in San Francisco is certainly looking like a difficult course with only half of the field in progress right now. As of now, 11 of 78 golfers in the first round have a score under par.

The marquee group of the first round include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson. Woods has played 12 holes overall, starting on the back nine and is currently at even for the tournament. After bogeying 14, he regained that stroke by scoring a birdie on 17.

Mickelson has struggled to start the tournament and is shooting four over through 12 completed holes. Mickelson started with three straight bogeys to start the back nine. After regaining one stroke with a birdie on 13, he bogeyed 14 and 16 to put him at his current score.

Watson has struggled the most of this group, now at seven over through 12 completed holes. Watson has bogeyed six holes and double bogeyed 18. The double bogey was after he birdied 17 to gain a stroke back.

There is currently a three way tie for the lead with Americans Jason Bohn and Michael Thompson and Spaniard Rafael Caballero-Bello all tied at two under.

2012 U.S. Open Odds: Tiger Woods The Favorite At Olympic

On the eve of the first round of the 2012 U.S. Open, Tiger Woods remains the favorite to win his fourth national championship. Woods enters the week coming off a rousing win at the Memorial that included a dramatic Sunday charge over the final four holes. He won at Bay Hill prior to The Masters, but finished T40 at the season's first major -- his worst career showing at Augusta National.

But the week at Muirfield Village was different than Bay Hill, with Woods converting his par-saving putts from six to 10 feet. That's perhaps the most important stat at the U.S. Open, with the winner usually at the top of the list of players who save pars from that distance. While he still has yet come through with his Sean Foley re-made swing at a major championship test, this certainly seems to be hist best shot with his form in control.

After Woods, the European trio of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, and Rory McIlroy are considered the next group with favorable odds. The top three ranked players in the world will all play together on Thursday and Friday. Some more of the favorites this week:

Tiger Woods 13/2
Lee Westwood 11/1
Luke Donald 11/1
Rory McIlroy 14/1
Phil Mickelson 20/1
Dustin Johnson 25/1
Jason Dufner 25/1
Justin Rose 28/1
Matt Kuchar 28/1
Adam Scott 33/1
Jim Furyk 33/1
Rickie Fowler 33/1
Zach Johnson 33/1
Hunter Mahan 40/1
Sergio Garcia 40/1
Steve Stricker 40/1
Bo Van Pelt 50/1
Bubba Watson 50/1

US Open Golf 2012: Phil Mickelson Ready For Longest Hole In Open History

The Olympic Club provides the toughest challenge in terms of course setup in the week known as the toughest test in golf. The course begins with a treacherous six-hole stretch that Bubba Watson said he would be pleased to play in 2-over par each day. Phil Mickelson called the stretch overrated, and indicated 1-over was acceptable but even-par should be attainable.

One hole Phil is not particularly enamored with is the par-5 16th. Olympic is that rare course (Baltusrol the other) where Tour pros, who feast on par-5s, have to wait for a shot to add a birdie on what's supposed to be a three-shot hole. Those have become nearly extinct since the the invent of the new ball, but the Lake Course presents a true three-shot test at No. 16. Mike Davis and the USGA created a back tee that measures out at 670 yards, the longest in U.S. Open history. The tee forces the player to play an extreme draw and really turn the ball over. Watson hit two drivers on Tuesday and was still 60 yards short of the green.

Even though it's a likely three-shot hole, No. 16, along with No. 17 and 18, present the rare birdie chances. That doesn't mean Phil likes it, via Steve Elling:

"It's definitely the hardest -- arguably the worst," he said.

[...]

"With the tee back, it eliminates any options," he said.

So much for strategy, he added.

"I would never say it's an unfair hole," he said. "I just don't think it's a good hole."

The players seemed generally pleased with the setup as they paraded through their day of press conferences. The USGA's setup is always topic A at the U.S. Open, and only the temperamental Watson really seemed to be skeptical of the course. He was negative throughout his conference, citing displeasure and perplexity with No. 13, No. 14, and No. 16.

2012 U.S. Open Tee Times And Pairings: USGA Creates Power Groups For 1st 2 Days

It's U.S. Open week and the Lake Course at Olympic is perhaps the toughest setup in the rota of courses used for the toughest test in golf. The course was built on a sand dune nestled on an immaculate track between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Merced. The sandy base ensures some of the fastest greens Tour pros will ever putt in their careers, and the USGA has already had to water them down to keep things from getting extreme. Olympic's six doglegs also all have fairways that bank the opposite way from the hole routing. It's an incredible test that Mike Davis will ensure is fair.

In addition to creating the toughest setup, the USGA is also renowned for creating groups ripe with juicy storylines, whether it's by links in players' backgrounds or simply by grouping the most successful players in the game. They have done that again this year, putting Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson together. While Woods enters coming off a win at Muirfield Village, there are still plenty of questions about his game and swing and how it will hold up on a major championship test like this. Watson and Mickelson are also not in top form, but Lefty continues to set his sights on the national championship -- the "white whale" of his career. Their group will go off at 10:33 a.m. on Thursday.

The USGA also created the UK equivalent of that power threesome, putting Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, and Rory McIlroy together. All three have held the No. 1 ranking over the past year, with McIlroy and Donald jostling for the top spot most recently. Rory is looking to defend his dominating win at Congressional last year, but he had missed three straight cuts before adding Memphis to his schedule last week. He was in contention at the St. Jude before rinsing his tee shot on the No. 18. Rory's group will tee off at 4:29 p.m. ET

For the third time since 2008, the USGA will schedule the tournament to be played during primetime on the east coast. It has been a successful format, started at Torrey Pines in 2008 and repeated at Pebble in 2010. A schedule of tee times below:

Morning wave off No. 1 tee:

10:15 a.m.: Scott Langley, Steve Lebrun, Beau Hossler (a)

2012 U.S. Open Odds: Tiger Woods Is Early Favorite

The 2012 U.S. Open gets underway this week at Olympic Club in San Francisco, and this event is the second of the four PGA Grand Slam events. The U.S. Open is traditionally a very tough event with scores usually near or around par, so even the best golfers can struggle.

Once again, Tiger Woods is the early favorite for a major as he is coming off a win at the Memorial tournament two weekends ago. People are saying Woods is back, but the same was said prior to the Masters where Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks prior, but he ended up in a tie for 40th place at the Masters.

Tiger Woods 6/1
Lee Westwood 10/1
Rory McIlroy 10/1
Luke Donald 12/1
Phil Mickelson 16/1
Dustin Johnson 20/1
Jason Dufner 28/1
Matt Kuchar 28/1
Bubba Watson 30/1
Adam Scott 33/1
Hunter Mahan 33/1
Justin Rose 33/1
Zach Johnson 33/1
Jim Furyk 40/1
Keegan Bradley 40/1
Louis Oosthuizen 40/1
Martin Kaymer 40/1
Nick Watney 40/1
Rickie Fowler 40/1
Steve Stricker 40/1

If Woods is able to prove the oddsmakers right and win the U.S. Open he will be in a tie for the most career U.S. Open wins, along with Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus with four.

U.S. Open Golf 2012: Tiger Woods, Casey Martin Will Play Practice Round Together On Monday

The 2012 U.S. Open begins play this Thursday at The Olympic Club, with players officially beginning practice rounds on Monday morning. The headline early group will see Tiger Woods playing with former Standford teammate Casey Martin, who may be as big a draw this week as Woods. Via Steve Corkran of the Mercury News:

The marquee group for the beginning of U.S. Open practice rounds Monday features Tiger Woods, former Stanford teammate Casey Martin, current Stanford sophomore Cameron Wilson and Oregon State junior Nick Sherwood.

The foursome tees off at Olympic Club at 7 a.m. in the first group of the day. Master's champion Bubba Watson is slated to tee off in the second group 15 minutes later.

Martin, who has not played competitively in five years, is currently the coach at Oregon. He earned a spot in the Open field by winning a sectional qualifier, defeating one of his own players in the process. This will be Martin's second appearance in a major. His first, coincidentally, was also at The Olympic Club, in 1998.

U.S. Open 2012 Sectional Qualifier: Tee Times, Pairings And More

The U.S. Open has always been a favorite among fans because, technically speaking, any golfer in America has a chance to participate. The first round of qualifying for the tournament, in which amateurs and recreational players alike could play, were held in mid-May. The winners of those "local qualifiers" advanced to one of 11 "sectional qualifiers", with the winners of that stage advancing to the official U.S. Open, taking place June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

This year, one of the 11 sectional qualifiers sites is Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. Woodmont has been a regular tournament site for both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifying, hosting the event for 21 years straight at one point.

The one-day, 36-hole sectional qualifying tournament will take place Monday, June 4th, with the earliest tee times at 7:00 a.m. 78 players are in the field, 13 amateurs and 65 professionals. As per the USGA, the number of qualifying spots are determined "by the field's numbers and strength."
