2012 U.S. Open Cup: D.C. United Eliminated By Philadelphia Union

D.C. United eked out a 2-1 win over Richmond in their opening game of the U.S. Open cup by burying a goal in extra time. In the second round on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Union, it was the opponent who scored the winning goal in extra time for a 2-1 victory. It was a disheartening loss in an otherwise ugly game on both sides. The first half was largely even, with relatively few shots on goal or scoring opportunities. But that changed in the final minute as the Union took a 1-0 lead when a Brian Carroll shot deflected off a DCU player and into the back of the net.

It didn't take long for D.C. United to respond, however, equalizing in the final minute before the half was out. Josh Wolff blasted it into the back of the net after Nick DeLeon headed it back from the endline into the center, finding Wolff. It would stay knotted at 1-1 throughout the second half, with few chances on either end for extended periods of time.

In the extra session, it was Philadelphia's Antoine Hoppenot, a relatively little-used player who had forced the action all night for the Union. Hoppenot scored the game winner in just the second minute of extra time, ending DCU's run in the U.S. Open Cup.
