Michael Phelps and three other DC-area swimmers will compete for Team USA in the pool at the 2012 London Olympics.

Once every four years, the United States is captivated by the USA Swimming Team in the Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics promise to be no different with plenty of star power and story lines. Perhaps the top story will be centered around Michael Phelps' pursuit to become the world's most decorated Olympian of all-time.

With just three medals of any color in London, the Baltimore-native will surpass Larissa Latynina, a former gymnast that competed for the then-Soviet Union, as the Olympian with the most medals earned. Phelps will compete in four individual events and three relays for seven opportunities at the medal podium.

Also representing the DC area for the USA Swimming Team will be two women competing in the 800m freestyle, Kate Ziegler and Katie Ledecky. Andrew Gemmell of Columbia, MD will represent the US in the 1,500m freestyle.
