2012 London Olympics Local Heroes: Baltimore's Michael Phelps Goes For First Gold Saturday In 400M IM

The first full day of competition features several athletes with ties to the D.C.-Baltimore area. SB Nation D.C. will spotlight these local heroes on each day of the Olympic games and keep you posted on how they're progressing.

Baltimore's Michael Phelps will dive right into the pool on the first full day of swimming Saturday, as he competes in the 400-meter IM. Heats will be run at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time (10:00 a.m. London time), with the final set for 2:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. London time). Phelps will race in five events at these games as he tries to follow up his eight-gold medal performance at the 2008 Games In Beijing.

A trio of locals will get their rowing competitions underway as well Saturday. Silver Spring-born Natalie Dell will compete in the women's quadruple sculls heats (4:50 a.m. Eastern time), while D.C. native David Banks and Peru-born Giuseppe Lanzone of Annandale, Va. will row in the men's eight heats (5:10 a.m.)

Nataly Arias played soccer at O'Connell High School (Arlington, Va.) and the University of Maryland, but she plays her soccer for Colombia. Her team faces the United States in a Group G match at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time. Colombia will need a positive result to have any hope of advancing to the next round after suffering a 2-0 loss to North Korea in their first game of the competition.

Finally, the individual eventing competition in equestrian will begin Saturday with the dressage event. Will Coleman of Gordonsville, Va. will be competing in that event, which lasts all day Saturday and Sunday.

These events can be seen live online at NBCOlympics.com. You can also check our listings to see when these events will be broadcast on TV.
