The first full week of competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics begins Monday, and most of the athletes with area ties will spend it on the water.
After finishing a disappointing 4th in the 400 meter IM and settling for silver as part of the 4 X 100 meter freestyle relay team, Michael Phelps is back in the water Monday to begin his second individual event, the 200 meter butterfly. Heats begin at 5:21 a.m., with the semifinals set to be run at 3:32 p.m. (The final will be run Tuesday night).
Staying with our nautical theme, D.C.-born Sarah Trowbridge begins her quest for gold in the women's double sculls event at Eton Dorney in Buckinghamshire. The two heats will be run at 5:20 a.m., with Trowbridge rowing alongside teammate Margot Shumway.
After just missing a place in the women's quadruple sculls final via Saturday's heats, Silver Spring-born Natalie Dell gets one more shot at a place in the gold medal race. She races in the repechage at 4:50 a.m.
And we can't forget about Caroline Queen. The Darnestown, Maryland native will make her Olympic debut Monday morning in the K-1 Slalom heats at 9:22 a.m. (By the way, spare a thought for Bethesda's Scott Parsons, who missed qualifying for the semifinals of the men's K-1 by just 1.59 points Sunday).
Finally, Gordonsville, Virginia's Will Coleman finished 26th in the individual dressage equestrian event, just two-tenths of a point behind noted Elizabeth II grandchild Zara Phillips. The cross-country portion begins at 7:30 a.m. in Greenwich. (The U.S. is in 7th after day one of the three-day event).
Remember, if you have a cable, satellite, or telco subscription, you can watch any of these events online here.
