The United States took the water on Monday to maintain a tie with China in the overall medal count at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Team USA picked up five medals in the pool as the games continued, bringing their overall medal count to 17 so far.
Matt Grevers won the gold in the men's 100m backstroke, racing far ahead of the competition in the second half of the race. Nick Thorman won the silver medal in that event. It was the first instance at this year's games for Team USA to earn more than one medal in a single event.
Team USA took home the gold in the women's 100m backstroke as well. Missy Franklin won that event, earning her first gold medal with four more events on her schedule. Rebecca Soni won a silver medal in the women's 100m breaststroke.
The United States now has five gold medals overall. China leads in that category with nine. A complete tally is available in the video below.
