23-year-old Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine won his second career singles title Sunday evening, defeating Tommy Haas 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-1 to win the 2012 Citi Open at the FitzGerald Tennis Center at Rock Creek Park.
The match was delayed twice in the first set by the rainstorms that raked the D.C. area Sunday afternoon. The delays totaled 1 hour, 50 minutes.
After Haas won the first set in a tiebreak, the players were on serve in the second set until the very last game, when Dolgopolov broke the German at 5-4 to even the match at one set all. The second set was the first that Haas had lost in the whole tournament.
The tension of the deciding third set was quickly dissipated, as Dolgopolov broke Haas twice to secure the title, his first in the ATP's 500 series.
With the win, Dolgopolov earned a purse of $1,049,760. While the tournament was overshadowed in star power by the London Olympic Tournament at Wimbledon, Dolgopolov will surely take the win as a massive confidence boost heading into this summer's U.S. Open, where he will hope to better last year's run to the 4th round.

Twenty-one year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia entered the finals of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. as the favorite. She was the top-seed. She was expected to win. Instead, however, Pavlyuchenkova was routed by Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova, who rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory Saturday night to capture the $220,000 title.
It marked Rybarikova's third-career championship after wins in Memphis last year and in Birmingham in 2009. The Slovakia native coasted comfortably against Pavlyuchenkova as a result of a strong start, capturing 20 of her first 21 service points (95 percent) in a match that lasted a mere total of 65 minutes.
In her first final of the year, Pavlyuchenkova was searching for her fourth WTA singles singles championship.
The men's final will be held Sunday between Germany's Tommy Haas and Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov. Both won their semifinal matches Saturday in two sets.

Though most in the tennis world are paying attention to what's going on in London, there still is an ATP tournament being held this weekend -- the 2012 Citi Open. Unfortunately for American tennis fans, top-seeded Mardy Fish was upset on Saturday.
Fish was upset by fourth-seeded Tommy Haas, 6-3, 7-5. Fish had won his second and third round matches in straight sets, but couldn't even take home on set in the semifinal match.
Haas has yet to drop a set in the tournament. Haas won his first round match over Michael Russel 6-4, 6-2, his second round match over Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 7-5, and his quarterfinal match over Tobias Kamke 6-1, 6-2.
Haas will face either American and eighth-seeded Sam Querrey or second-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov in the final, which will be held on Sunday.
The women's final will be held on Saturday night, between top-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Magdalena Rybarikova.

Four top-seeded Americans advanced on Thursday during the fourth day of action at the 2012 Citi Open. On the men's side, both Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish breezed through with straight set victories. Fish is the top-ranked male in the tournament, but he's had a rough summer dealing with multiple injuries. Fish returned at Wimbledon after sitting out for months after doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat. He had a strong showing in London but suffered an ankle injury last week that has hobbled him a bit in DC this week.
But injury issue hasn't drastically affected his ability to advance, as he defeated Ricardas Berankis, 6-3, 6-1, to move on to the third round. Fish gave up just two break chances and he'll now face Xavier Malisse, who upset Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
Querrey defeated German Benjamin Becker, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the third round. Querrey put Becker on his heels throughout the match and is playing with tons of confidence as he tries to build momentum towards the US Open.
On the women's side of the draw, the ultra-talented teenager Sloane Stephens advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Eugenie Bouchard. Stephens continues her solid play after making some noise this summer. She'll face Magdalena Rybarikova in the semifinals. The other women's semi will feature American Vania King, who defeated Coco Vandeweghe in three sets.

American James Blake cruised to a quick victory in straight sets over Marco Chiudinelli, taking him down 6-2, 6-4 to continue in the tournament. Tobias Kamke took down Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 6-3 in the late match of the afternoon.
On the women's side of things, No. 4 seeded Vania King won in straight sets over Irini Falconi 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) but it wasn't easy as King needed to win a tie break. Coco Vandeweghe cruised right past Aravane Rezai 6-2, 6-2 to win in straight sets.
Eugenie Bouchard was able to upset No. 8 seed Olga Govortsova after dropping the first set 6-1. Bouchard came back to rally and win the next two sets 6-0, 6-3 to take the match.

Top-seeded Mardy Fish survived a three-set match on Tuesday night at the 2012 Citi Open in Washington, DC. Fish has had a tumultuous season, sitting out nearly three months after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. He returned at Wimbledon and looked impressive, despite the rust, exiting in the fourth round with a loss to Jo-Wilifried Tsonga. But Fish then encountered ankle trouble last week in Atlanta.
With the field limited due to the Olympics, Fish has a golden opportunity to gather some momentum in DC as the summer progresses towards the season's final major. But he had an opening set scare on Tuesday, forcing him to rebound and defeat Bjorn Phau 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping that first set, Fish went on to win 10 of 11 games to advance convincingly. On the men's side, German Tommy Haas and Alexandr Dolgopolov joined Fish by advancing to the second round.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the top ranked woman, also advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Bojana Jovanovski. American fourth-seeded Vania King defeated fellow American Jennifer Ellie, 6-3, 6-4.

Two of the bigger draws at the 2012 Citi Open advanced on Monday night as Americans James Blake and Sloane Stephens held on to win their matches in the third set. Blake defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. He'll now face the winner of the Marco Chiudinelli and Horacio Zeballos match. Blake cruised over the final two sets, converting nine aces and holding serve on the hardcourt. While Blake moved on, fellow American Brian Baker was knocked out by Florent Serra 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Unlike Blake, Stephens roared out to a quick start against Sesil Karatantcheva before hitting a bump in the second set. The promising teenager rebounded in the third set to advance with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory. Stephens is seeded third but is the top draw on the women's side. She lost four straight games in the second set before regrouping to show off that wealth of talent that tennis fans have glimpsed this season -- particularly at the All-England club before she was bounced in the third round by Sabine Lisicki.
