2012 London Olympics Local Heroes: Andy Najar Leads Honduras, While Rowers Go For Gold

Not many local athletes are in action at the 2012 Summer Olympics Wednesday, but those who are have crucial moments ahead of them.

In men's soccer, D.C. United's Andy Najar will lead Honduras in their final match of Group D against Japan in Coventry, England (12 p.m.). Honduras currently sits 2nd in Group D and can secure advancement to the quarterfinals by gaining at least a point in this match.

Three U.S. crews will row for gold Wednesday, and one of them is the men's eight, who feature locals David Banks and Giuseppe Lanzone (5:30 a.m.). Another is the women's quadruple scull (5:20 a.m.), which features Silver Spring's own Natalie Dell.

Michael Phelps has a record 19 medals, but why would anyone expect him to stop there? Phelps goes for No. 20 in the 200m IM (qualifying heats at 6:06 a.m., semifinals at 3:36 p.m.). Keep an eye out for Charlottesville, Va.-born Lauren Perdue, who is in the relay pool for the women's 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay (heats at 6:26 a.m., final at 4:04 p.m.)

Finally, in sailing, Farrah Hall finished 22nd and 18th in the first two races in the RS-X event. Two more races go off at 9:30 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

All of these events can be viewed live on NBCOlympics.com.
