2012 Olympics Medal Count: U.S. Dominates In London

With the 2012 London Olympics now a memory, it's easy to see the United States had a very good two weeks. After all the dust settled, the Americans dominated the medal stand by earning 104.

Without question, some of the most enduring events and moments were authored by an United States participant. One of the best stories is D.C.'s own Michael Phelps, who perhaps staked his claim as the best Olympian ever, winning another fistful of medals in his third straight Games.

The U.S. Basketball teams were once again terrific, winning gold in their respective events while the Women's Soccer team emerged victorious against Canada in a match for the ages before getting revenge on Japan in the final.

Nine medals were won by local athletes, including two by the aforementioned Phelps. Gabby Douglas took home gold in gymnastics while Georgia Gould (biking), Katie Ledecky (swimming) and Francarena McCrory (Track and Field) also earned a gold medal.

Overall here are the final standings in the medal count:

  1. United States: 104 - (46 Gold, 29 Silver, 29 Bronze)
  2. China: 87 - (38 Gold, 27 Silver, 22 Bronze)
  3. Russia: 82 - (24 Gold, 25 Silver, 33 Bronze)
  4. England: 65 - (29 Gold, 17 Silver, 19 Bronze)
  5. Germany: 44 - (11 Gold, 19 Silver, 14 Bronze)
