Tossing three interceptions against a FCS team is typically frowned upon for the starting quarterback of a BCS conference squad. But reviews for Perry Hills, the true freshman quarterback who was forced into action just weeks before the season after an injury to C.J. Brown, aren't entirely negative.
Ben Broman of Testudo Times didn't call Hills' debut good, but they didn't call it bad either:
But keep in mind the situation, with a true freshman making his first ever start and the rest of the offense trying to work in a new scheme to boot. With that in mind he was, strangely enough, quite promising outside of those three picks. No bust-ups in the huddle. No embarrassing mistakes on the snap. Intermediate routes were often on target and delivered crisply and on time. He looked composed when he had time. Given the circumstances, it really wasn't an awful showing, certainly not as awful as the three interceptions will look on the statline. Far from a good one, mind you, but there's plenty to build upon here.
There's obviously a lot of criticism to be had at the expense of a team that eked out a late victory thanks to a lone touchdown against what should be a lesser opponent, and that criticism is there: Broman calls out Maryland's offensive gameplan, offensive line, players on the Terrapins' defense and special teams. But the team could have gotten worse from Hills, who completed two-thirds of his passes for a respectable 145 yards, although they're in major trouble if the true freshman doesn't progress and stop turning the ball over as the season continues.

It wasn't pretty, but the Maryland Terrapins squeaked out a 7-6 victory over William and Mary on Saturday to kick off Randy Edsall's second season at the helm in College Park. SB Nation's Maryland blog Testudo Times sums up the game perfectly:
The most unsatisfying victory ever? If the Maryland Terrapins' 7-6 win over William and Mary isn't it, I'm not sure what could top it. The Terrapins turned the ball over four times - three of them Perry Hills turnovers - and were shut out going into the fourth quarter, needing a late 69-yard drive (and a dropped William and Mary touchdown) to survive against the Tribe. But, thanks to a six-yard Justus Pickett touchdown run, survive they did.
Maryland travels to Lincoln Financial Field next Saturday to take on the Temple Owls.

It was a serious battle, but Maryland has done it - the Terps have defeated William & Mary in their opening game of the season, by a final score of 7-6.
A ten play, 69-yard drive to start out the fourth quarter finally put Maryland on the board. Perry Hills had two big completions - one to Stefon Diggs and one to Kevin Dorsey, and had an eight-yard run that set up the eventual score: a six-yard Justus Pickett run from a QB read.
Maryland's defensive did their part, holding the Tribe to 60 yards of total offense in the quarter, culminating with a fourth down sack of Raphael Ortize by Jeremiah Johnson with a minute and a half left to seal the game. Ortiz fumbled the ball, and Demetrius Hartsfield recovered, bring the ball back to the six yard line. Perry Hills kneeled the Terps out, and Maryland won 7-6.
We'll have a full recap up with stats and reactions after the post-game presser.

Maryland continues to trail against William & Mary in their season opener, as the Terps are down 6-0 at the start of the fourth quarter.
With about ten minutes left in the quarter, Perry Hills threw his third interception of the game. Hills completely missed Kevin Dorsey on a slant route, finding William & Mary safety Ivan Tagoe waiting for the uncontested pick. Maryland's defense was able to step up and force a punt on the Tribe's next drive, preventing any further damage.
Randy Edsall decided to keep Hills out there for another drive, and the Terps had yet another three and out. Both offenses sputtered throughout, with 103 yards of total offense between the two teams. In the quarter, there were three punts and one interceptions.
Tribe kicker Drake Kuhn missed a 48-yard field goal to start out the fourth quarter.
Perry Hills is now 12/19 for 99 yards and three interceptions, Justus Pickett has rushed eight times for 30 yards, and Albert Reid has eight carries for 15 yards. Stefon Diggs has five total touches for 59 yards.
Maryland was unable to chip away at William & Mary's 6-0 lead in the second quarter, as both offenses struggled and the score stayed the same.
After a strong drive at the beginning of the quarter, led by 18 yards from Justus Pickett and 45 total yards from Perry Hills, true freshman kicker/punter Brad Craddock missed a 25-yard field goal wide left with seven and a half minutes left in the half.
Maryland's defense continued a strong effort, led by a fat guy interception courtesy of Joe Vellano. Vellano has seven tackles, including two for a loss, through the first two quarters. The only other Terrapin with more than three tackles is Demetrius Hartsfield, who has six.
Outside of the defensive end, Maryland's best player has probably been punter Nathan Renfro. Renfro has two punts - one for 48 yards, and one for 60 - in his collegiate debut.
Hills is 10/16 for 90 yards, largely from screen passes, and the two interceptions from the first quarter. Justus Pickett has five rushes for 18 yards and Albert Reid has carried the ball eight times for 15 yards. Marcus Leak leads all Maryland receivers with three receptions for 37 yards, and Kerry Boykins, Stefon Diggs, and Reid all have two receptions apiece.
The Terps have done a good job stifling the Tribe's passing attack, holding Brent Caprio to 3/7 for 25 yards and Raphael Ortiz to 1/4 for 13 yards. Keith McBride II has five rushes for 20 yards.
Maryland's 2012 season appears to be going the way many feared - turnovers, a disorganized offense, and a defense decent enough to keep it close. The Terps are trailing 6-0 after the first quarter in their home opener against William & Mary, as the Tribe have taken advantage of three opening quarter turnovers to turn out an early lead.
Maryland received the kick to start out the game, and curiously decided to pass the ball twice in a row with true freshman quarterback Perry Hills. The second pass was picked off by De-Andre Houston-Carson, and William & Mary's Drake Kuhn nailed a 30-yard field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.
With about five minutes left in the quarter, Hills threw another interception, and Brian Thompson returned it to the Terps' nine-yard line. Kuhn hit the 22-yarder after Maryland's defense was able to shut down William & Mary in the red zone again.
Albert Reid fumbled the ball late in the quarter, and the Tribe recovered, giving the Terps' three turnovers in the first fifteen minutes. William & Mary will start out the second quarter with the ball in Maryland territory.
Star true freshman Stefon Diggs has three touches in his debut - a 15-yard punt return, a five-yard screen reception, and a seven-yard run. Hills is 6/9 for 47 yards and the two picks, and Albert Reid has run five times for eleven yards. The defense looks fine - Joe Vellano already has five tackles - but the offense is struggling in a major way in their first game under Mike Locksley.

The Maryland Terrapins kickoff the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, as they play host to the William & Mary Tribe at Byrd Stadium.
Randy Edsall's Terrapins will certainly look to improve in 2012. In Edsall's first year as Maryland head coach in 2011, the Terrapins went a disappointing 2-10. Edsall made a few changes following the 2011 season, notably, bringing in Mike Locksley to take over as the offensive coordinator and Brian Stewart to be the new defensive coordinator.
At the least, Edsall will look to get Maryland back to a bowl game, after dropping the final eight games of the 2011 season. It'll be a difficult battle for Edsall, as Maryland's starting quarterback, C.J. Brown, is out for the season with a torn ACL.
Edsall's offense will now rely on a pair of true freshmen quarterbacks, Perry Hillis and Caleb Rowe.
Game time, TV channel: 3 p.m. ET, ESPN3.

University of Maryland tailback Brandon Ross will miss Saturday's opener against William & Mary due to a hamstring injury. Freshman Albert Reid will replace Ross as the starter with Justus Pickett and Wes Brown expected to act as reserves, according to head coach Randy Edsall.
Via The Washington Times:
"All three guys are going to play," Edsall said. "We have roles for the guys. Albert will start, Justus has his role and Wes will be ready to go as well."
In addition, defensive end Keith Bowers will not be playing, which was expected considering he was declared doubtful earlier in the week. According to Edsall, his staff has informed him that Bowers should be ready for the team's second game against Temple on Sept. 9.
Other players that have already been ruled out include:
- Nick Ferrara (hip)
- Josh Cary (knee)
- Isaac Goins (illness)
- A.J. Hendy (ankle)
- Abner Logan (thigh)
- Andre Monroe (knee)
- Matt Robinson (shoulder)
- Isaiah Ross (hamstring)
- Kenny Tate (knee)

The status of Maryland Terrapins sophomore defensive end Keith Bowers for the team's season opener against William & Mary is doubtful, head coach Randy Edsall announced Tuesday. If Bowers doesn't play, the Terrapins' defensive line will be missing two players as fellow lineman Isaiah Ross was proclaimed out as well.
The news doesn't come as too much of a surprise, as both players were not listed on the team's depth chart. Instead, seniors Joe Vellano and A.J. Francis each will start, while freshman Quinton Jefferson and junior Justin Anderson will be their backups, respectively.
Despite having dependable fill-ins, the Terrapins have lost a lot of bodies on the defensive line including Andre Monroe for the season. The loss of Bowers, who started in 11 of the 12 games he played in last season and earned College Football News' freshman All-American honors, could be a tough one to overcome in the long run.

College football is right around the corner, and the Maryland Terrapins are bringing some fresh faces to the party.
No fewer than 14 true freshmen adorn the depth chart for the season opener against William & Mary.
The most prominent of those players are quarterback Perry Hills, wide receiver/kick returner Stefon Diggs and cornerback Sean Davis. All three are projected to be a big part of the gameplan and obviously will have a big hand in how the season plays out.
There are plenty of other freshmen who figure to get ample playing time despite being listed as reserves. WR NIgel King is currently slated behind Kevin Dorsey, but could see some action. Alvin Hill and Makinton Dorleant are also on the depth chart as backup corners, but should get time in subpackages.
In less than a week, we'll know exactly how head coach Randy Edsall has in mind.
