U.S. Open Tennis 2012: Virginian Denis Kudla Loses First-Round Match To Marcel Granollers

Denis Kudla, who makes his home in Arlington, Va., lost his U.S. Open first-round match Monday to tournament No. 24 seed Marcel Granollers three sets to one, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-7 (2-7).

Kudla, who just recently turned 20 years old, is originally from Kiev, Ukraine. This defeat is his fourth first-round exit in six tournaments this year.

He finished the match with four aces and four winners, but also added four double faults. Granollers topped Kudla with 11 aces and only two unforced errors, eventually winning the match in just over three hours. Kudla took 125 total points to Granollers' 138. Grannolers now will face American James Blake in the second round, who defeated his first-round opponent Lukas Lacko in four sets.
