Caroline Wozniacki's attempt to capture her first major championship will have to wait at least until 2013 as the former world No. 1 and U.S. Open's eighth seed fell quickly in straight sets to unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-2, 6-2.
Tuesday night's action on Louis Armstrong Stadium from the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. turned out to be surprising, as Begu, who has not advanced past the second round at any major, quickly disposed of the favored Wozniacki. Begu now advances in a quarter of the women's draw whose biggest remaining name, No. 4 Serena Williams, was also in action Tuesday night against fellow American Coco Vandeweghe.
Begu will face Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the second round after the Spaniard defeated Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-3, 6-2 in her first round match. Soler-Espinosa, who is currently ranked 58th in the world, advanced to the third round in last year's U.S. Open.
