2012 London Olympics Local Heroes: One Last Swim For Michael Phelps Saturday

The first full week of the London Olympics will come to a close Saturday, as will the Olympic career of Baltimore's Michael Phelps, who races in the men's 4x100 medley relay in search of what would be his 22nd Olympic medal and 18th gold. (3:27 p.m.)

A bevy of local athletes are involved in track and field events Saturday. Portsmouth, Virginia's LaShawn Merritt runs in the men's 400m preliminaries (5:35 a.m.). Norfolk-born Lacy Janson will make her first attempts in the women's pole vault (5:20 a.m.) and Hampton's Francena McCorory will run in the semifinals of the women's 400m (3:05 p.m.)

In cycling, Bobby Lea (Easton, Md.) will compete in the men's omnium event, which consists of a 250m time trial (5:30 a.m.), a 30km points race (11:54 a.m.), and an elimination race (1:25 p.m.). Three more events take place Sunday.

In sailing, the women's RS-X races resume Saturday after a day off. Farrah Hall of Annapolis is in 22nd after six races, with two more set to run at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. in Weymouth.

In the team events: Reid Priddy and the U.S. men's volleyball team face Russia (11:45 a.m.). Peter Hudnut and the men's water polo team meet Serbia at 2:40 p.m., while the U.S. women's field hockey team tries to keep its medal hopes alive against New Zealand at 2 p.m.

In basketball, Kevin Durant and the U.S. face Lithuania at 9:30 a.m. Also, Kevin Seraphin and France face Tunisia at 4 a.m., Nene and Brazil meet China at 11:45 a.m., former George Washington standout Pops Mensah-Bonsu tries to lead Great Britain to its first win of these Games against Australia (3 p.m.), and Tony Skinn will lead Nigeria as they try to topple Argentina (5:15 p.m.)

Finally, Andy Najar's quest for an Olympic soccer medal continues Saturday as his Honduras side meets Brazil in the quarterfinals at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England (12 p.m.)

And condolences to Silver Spring's Phobay Kutu-Akoi (running for Liberia), who was eliminated in the first round of the women's 100m dash.
