2012 PGA Championship Update: Carl Pettersson Leads At 6-Under, Tiger Woods Trails By 3

The 2012 PGA Championship is well underway at the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina on Thursday afternoon. At the top of the leaderboard is a surprising name. Carl Pettersson from Sweden is on top of the leaderboard at the PGA Championship after shooting a six-under 66.

Pettersson came off the first tee on fire, birdying three of the first four holes. Though he only shot two more birdies the rest of the round, it was enough to give him a one stroke lead over Gary Woodland of the United States and Rory McIlroy of England who both shot five-under 67s.

Tiger Woods had a very up and down first round. After trading birdies and bogeys over four holes, Woods birdied four holes, three on the front-nine despite another bogey and finished with a three-under 69, three strokes behind Pettersson.

Other golfers from the D.C. area include Brandon de Jonge, out of Zimbabwe but went to college at Virginia Tech, standing at one-under through nine holes. Rockville, Md.'s Daniel Balin is currently two-over through nine holes.
