The No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies suffered an embarrassing defeat, 35-17, at the hands of the previously winless Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday, and the Virginia Tech defense wasn't the dominant force that many have come to expect.
The Panthers amassed 537 total yards, including 254 yards on the ground, in their win over the Hokies.
Casey Richie, of SB Nation's Gobbler Country, was disappointed in the Hokies' defensive performance:
For a defense that has been touted as one of the best the Hokies may have ever fielded, they played pretty pathetically. Bud Foster must have missed the trip to Pittsburgh this weekend because the play calls were atrocious and this is not what we've become accustomed to as Hokie fans. Players playing far too off the ball, giving Pitt players plenty of space in the secondary and then not even looking for the ball. Pitt figured out early that they could both pass and run on us and they didn't shy away. The only time it seemed that the Hokies had any success was on slow-developing pass plays, when they were able to get to Sunseri. Otherwise, Rushel Shell and Ray Graham tore it up on the ground and Sunseri through the air.
The Hokies' defense allowed Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri to be efficient, as he completed 19-of-28 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns.
The loss drops Virginia Tech to 2-1 on the season. The Hokies will host Bowling Green next Saturday at noon ET. After Bowling Green, they will face one more non-conference opponent in Cincinnati before getting into ACC play for the remainder of the schedule.

The Virginia Tech Hokies lost their first game of the season Saturday afternoon, a stunning upset at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers, 35-17. Star quarterback Logan Thomas wasn't his usual prolific self, throwing three interceptions with just a 45.2 completion percentage, and the Hokies offense suffered as a result.
The real story of the game, though, wasn't Thomas' poor play, but the play of Pitt's running backs. Rushel Shell led the way with 23 rushes for 157 yards and Ray Graham carried the rock 24 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Pitt quarterback Tino Sunseri was hobbling at the end of the game, but played well throughout, finishing 19-28 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, with an interception that came on the play he was injured. He finished the game, however.
The Hokies got absolutely nothing out of the running game, and didn't really try to, either. Michael Holmes led the team in carries with nine, but gained just eight yards. Thomas kept it seven times and ran for 28 yards.
The Hokies fell to 2-1 with the loss, and the Panthers, who lost to Youngstown State and Cincinnati in their first two games, improved to 1-2 with the upset victory.

Virginia Tech left guard David Wang was carted off the field with an apparent left foot injury during the Hokies Saturday matchup against Pitt. Wang was being pushed back into the pocket when quarterback Logan Thomas fell into the back of the his legs. Thomas was standing in the pocket when he was hit by Pitt rusher Aaron Donald. The massive VT quarterback went flying into the back of Wang, who instantly went down in pain. Thomas rolled up on Wang's right foot, but the guard immediately went to grab his left foot. An animated gif of the play:
Wang was carted off the field with his shoe and sock removed from his left foot. The redshirt junior from Ashburn was injured just eight snaps into the second game of the season last year, missing the remainder of the year with a fractured foot.
Matt Arkema came on to replace him at left guard.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are the No. 13 team in the country, and the Pittsburgh Panthers lost to Youngstown State and then Cincinnati in their first two games of the season, but the future ACC foes have had their roles reversed as the Panthers lead the Hokies 21-3 after the first half.
Virginia Tech's star quarterback, Logan Thomas, has thrown three interceptions, giving the Panthers opportunity after opportunity to drive the field and score. However, the Hokies haven't been able to contain the Pitt offense. The same Panther team that scored just 17 points against Youngstown State has gashed the Hokies, with quarterback Tino Sunseri and running back Ray Graham leading the charge.
Sunseri is 10-14 for 185 yards and a touchdown, Graham has rushed for 65 yards and 12 carries and has scored twice. If the Panthers can continue to run the ball like they have and turn over the Hokies, this could be a massive upset.
