Penn State Vs. Virginia: Cavaliers Escape With 17-16 Victory

The Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) survived a scare from the visiting Penn State Nittany Lions (0-2) on Saturday, escaping with a 17-16 win only after Penn State kicker Sam Ficken missed his fourth field goal of the day. The Nittany Lions forced four turnovers in Virginia territory but were unable to capitalize.

Penn State and new head coach Bill O'Brien looked like they might steal a victory in Charlottesville, before a late Virginia 12 play, 86 yard drive culminated in a Michael Rocco to Jake McGee touchdown pass with just 1:28 left in the game. Rocco finished 21 of 33 on the day, for 238 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. McGee caught four balls for 99 yards and the touchdown.

Penn State managed to set Ficken up for a 42-yard field goal as time expired, but the sophomore missed his fourth kick of the afternoon.

Penn State Vs. Virginia: Cavaliers Trail, 7-3, At Half

The Virginia Cavaliers trail Penn State, 7-3, after one half in Charlottesville. The Cavs have struggled to get anything going on offense but finally broke the shutout towards the end of the second quarter with a Drew Jarrett 46-yard field goal. Quarterback Michael Rocco is 10 of 19 for 83 yards and a touchdown, and the Cavs have been unable to establish much of anything on the ground. The PSU defense has applied consistent pressure to Rocco, making him uncomfortable on most of his throws.

Penn State began the game with a clock-eating drive that ended with a Matt McGloin eight-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Carter. The drive was 17 plays and kept the UVA defense on the field more than six minutes. But the defense would respond and keep PSU in check from there, despite some aggressive play calling by Bill O'Brien.

The big development of the first half was Ausar Walcott knocking McGloin out of the game. McGloin was hit on the elbow in the exact same spot on two consecutive series and was forced to the locker room in the middle of the second quarter. True freshman Steven Bench came on in relief for the Nittany Lions.
