Virginia Tech Vs. Boise State Recap

Landover, MD (Sports Network) – Kellen Moore’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis with 1:09 remaining in the game provided third-ranked Boise State with a thrilling 33-30 win over No. 10 Virginia Tech in an action-packed season-opener for both schools.

It was an incredible night for Pettis. The senior wide receiver blocked a punt and caught a second touchdown pass for the Broncos (1-0), who last year became just the second team in NCAA history to record a 14-0 season, capping it with a 17-10 win over TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Playing out of the Western Athletic Conference for a last season, the Broncos have already started the debate if they can be BCS busters this year and reach the national title game. They accomplished the first step against what should be BSU’s only ranked opponent this season.

Moore threw for three scores, while D.J. Harper ran for another TD for the Broncos.

Tyrod Taylor had a pair of touchdown throws for the Hokies (0-1), who are coming off a 10-3 season last year when they downed Tennessee in the Chick- Fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome. Ryan Williams rushed for a pair of scores and caught another TD pass.

After a Virginia Tech punt, Moore led the Broncos on a drive that was aided by a big late hit call. Pettis caught a 14-yard pass on the left sideline, but Bruce Taylor’s hit out of bounds tacked on more yardage.

Two plays later, Pettis got free in the back of the end zone and caught a perfect strike from Moore.

Taylor couldn’t drive the Hokies past midfield, and Jarrett Boykin failed to hold onto a long fourth down pass that would’ve given Virginia Tech the ball deep in BSU territory. The Broncos ran out the remaining half-minute.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise State: Virginia Tech Falls Short In Comeback Bid, Loses 33-30 To Boise State

Tyrod Taylor couldn’t bring the Hokies back from behind in the final minutes as he had for most of the game. When it mattered the most, Virginia Tech couldn’t make the plays they needed to get in position to at least take the game into overtime.

The final drive for the Hokies consisted of 3 incomplete passes by Tyrod Taylor, and one sack taken. On two of the passes, including the Hokies final play, Taylor threw the ball deep down the field, opting to not try to just get the first down.

The final game recap of the game will be up on SB Nation DC momentarily. Stay Tuned.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise State: Broncos Take Lead With One Minute To Go

Boise State scores with one minute left on an impressive 5 play, 56 yard touchdown drive that took just 38 seconds.

Virginia Tech sat back in a prevent and it cost them the lead.

The Hokies have two timeouts and at least have to drive into field goal range to try to take this game into overtime.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise St: Hokies Extend Lead With 34 Yard Field Goal

A 10 play, 63 yard, drive by the Hokies is capped off with a 34 yard field goal by kicker C. Hazley extending their lead to four points.

Virginia Tech was fortunate to still have the lead because Boise State should have easily hit a 30 yard field goal on the prior possession. Instead their kicker missed it because of a bad snap to the holder allowing Tech to maintain in control of the game.

Special teams for both of the participants will be the story for this game once it is all said and done.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise St: Hokies Go For It On Fourth Down And Score

A roughing the kicker penalty comes back to haunt Boise State. After the penalty, the Hokies were left with 5 yards to go for a 1st down on 4th down. They decided to go for it and instead of a first down, they got a touchdown.

A failed two point conversion, which left Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor on the ground in pain, keeps the game close at 27-26.

These two teams are picking up the scoring pace in the 2nd half making this game one of the most exciting games to be played at FedEx Field in years.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise St: Boise State Strikes Back Quickly

A little over one minute is all it took for Boise State to re-take the lead over Virginia Tech with a 71 yard scamper by Broncos running back D.J. Harper.

On third and short with the Hokies stacking the line, Harper found a small opening to cut through, broke a couple tackles, and sped away for the touchdown. No Hokie was even close to catching the speedy Harper once he was past the defense.

Boise State leads 26-21 in the third quarter.

Virginia Tech Vs. Boise St: One Yard Run By Ryan Williams Gives The Hokies The Lead

The deliberate Hokies offense has started to wear down the Boise State defense. After an impressive seven play, 68 yard drive punctuated by a 1 yard Ryan Williams score, the Hokies have taken the lead over the Broncos 21-20.

NFL Depth Chart: Redskins Retain Lichtensteiger, Jarmon and Young; Release Andserson Russell

Three more Washington Redskins have just been guaranteed a job for the foreseeable future. Offensive lineman Kory Lichtensteiger, defensive end Jeremy Jarmon and linebacker Darrel Young have been retained by the Washington Redskins according to sources.

Via Rich Campbell:

As @granthpaulsen reported, Kory Lichtensteiger made the team. He was the most athletic backup G/C they had, IMO. #Redskins

Just got a text from Darrel Young, who has made the#Redskins. Converted LB said, "They kept me on the 53 man roster.'

I'm told Jeremy Jarmon has made the team. #Redskins

Also, via Grant Paulsen, safety Anderson Russell has been cut but will be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
