Erick Thohir, an Indonesian businessman who also owns a share of the Philadelphia 76ers, is close to purchasing a majority stake in D.C. United, according to The Washington Post.

Erick Thohir, an Indonesian businessman who also owns a share of the Philadelphia 76ers, is close to purchasing a majority stake in D.C. United from the club's sole investor, Will Chang, according to a report by Steven Goff of The Washington Post.

Goff also reports that a second, unknown person, described as "an American with sports connections", is also planning on investing in the club in addition to Thohir, who attended training with the unknown partner last week at RFK Stadium.

Chang, who is also one of the partners in the group that owns the San Francisco Giants, discussed his intentions with Goff Thursday.

I love this team, I'm not getting out and I will continue to own a significant part of this team ... I don't have an agreement ... We're talking to several parties, I am getting a lot of interest, and that's where we are. I don't have anything concrete right now.

Chang has been United's lone investor since 2009. United President Kevin Payne has expressed his hope that new investment in D.C. United could pave the way for a new stadium to be built in the District.

We hope these conversations with new partners will come to fruition this spring and conversations with the District [about a stadium] can resume in late spring or early summer.
